^^ well i have to say im with you on this one.. but then I can't build it myself so would be looking at 5k for a different engine - or spend that on any number of cars that would be quicker and handle better!!! lol

One other thing to remember when people say
    a CTR makes 200odd HP from a 2.0
    a BMW M3 makes 320 from a 3.2

A VR6 engine was designed in 1992 when BMW were getting 192 out of a 2.8 6cy with Vanos unit, honda were making 158 from a 1.6 with VTEC.

if a VR6 had variable valve timing then a lot more power could be extracted from it.

and yes prof for what some people spend on a VR conversion you could buy a supra/300zx/audi S2 + any number of 300HP + cars

NealH - i know what you mean about the fun you can have raggin a car to within an inch of its life and not worrying about speeding however i did not find this in my mk2 8v but in a 1.0L polo lol

5k + autotrader = some great cars that will be a better base than any Golf platform

Ok the VR6 12v has a poor output for it's size but when you combine that power/torque in a car weighing just over 1000kg , it goes VERY well .

Next time you see me at an event, come out for a spin...

exactly. in a mk2, it makes all the sense in the world, and a lovely noise

i bet yours, with the better delivery, is actually a much nicer car to drive day to day too. in a mk2 its a no brainer.

Mine's got a few cheap mods to put the power up to 215bhp - along with the lower final drive and limited slip diff it's a cracking car to drive.

I've posted a few vids on here over the last couple of years to show what it's like.

never got the conversion in a mk1 though? surely the weight is going to have an adverse effect on handling in a little mk1?

I wouldn't put one in a mk1, especially not turbo'ed and four wheel drive, must be rubbish....

You probably could get a different type of car for the same or less $$$$ but if your into Golfs it has to be a Golf. For sure.

    ^those are awesome figures from a 16v!

more power than a lot of VRs and 20vts but i suppose it has come at a similar cost!?

ps. Pascal - was good to meet you the other day an sort that engine - Ed has been busy and its looking like its nearly ready to drop in.
