    Guys

I changed my cam belt on my 1985 1.8 8v, but had problems trying to line the marks up, managed to get pullies to line up and it turned over but now car wont start, alll i can hear is a clicking noise.

Have checked the battery and its full, took the starter off and shorted it turns fine.

I am wondering if i have replaced one of the pullies upside down???

Any help is welcome been trying to fix for 3 days

    Thanks

    fantastic.

well it sounds more like an issue with the starter wiring. the mk2s have a really common issue with the earth that goes to the gearbox. clean up the contacts, i went as far as to add another earth onto the starter itself when mine refused to turn over with a perfectly good battery

maybe double check all those timing marks just to be safe...easier to spend another 20 mins than louse it up

    Thanks for the help

Here is where i am now

Engine were turn over very sluggish and stop
    then wont turn again
removed plugs and engine spins free

Think i have the crankshaft pulley 180deg out, is this possible ??

I noticed that when i refitted the pulley the little locking key could fit in two places ???

yeah sounds like cam /ign timing

go over it all until you are 100% sure

if you use the flywheel mark then its foolproof

yeh it is a 0 shove something down #1 piston to confirm its at the top , the mark should be visible then

once the belt is on right...check where the rotor arm is pointing

Bump - did you get anywhere with this? Sounds like it's probably cam timing, but if the ignition timing is way too far advanced it can make an engine harder to turn over too.
