i have been offered a set of alloys,17" but 8" wide, what will be the best size tyres,205 or 215 i'm not to keen on the stretched look but i dont want anything rubbing, the car is on standard shocks & springs, but hoping to drop soon only by 30-35mm.

It depends on the offset, but 8x17 is pushing it a bit on standard arches unless you run it exceedingly high! You may well need to do at least a bit of rolling on the back arches.

205/40/17 at most- though if you don't mind a bit of stretch a 195 will reduce rubbing issues.
