hey guys just a quick question as im gunna be replacing the sump gasket on my KR in the near future, ive read a few threads where people have used windage trays, is this simply to reduce drag on the crank from the oil or something?
Basically, do i need one??? if so where from and how much???

    thank you please

You'll have to loose the clip on plastic baffle when fitting the tray, hence why most go for a baffled sump at the same time.

as you said stops the crank getting covered in oil basically so it doesnt have as much drag on it.Spose if youve got the sump off etc it isnt gonna cause any harm fitting one

It`s less about reducing `drag` of the crank, and more about reducing the amount of aeration of the oil... ;)

How much `drag` do you think some oil will create on a crank doing anywhere between 1000 and 7000rpm??

What can be a problem is the oil becoming aerated (ie, foaming), and the pump being unable to pump it effectively, leading to pressure drop and lack of lubrication.

This is normally only a problem from engines that are subjected to high RPMs regularly or for prolonged periods (ie, track or race cars), so isn`t a massive benefit in a road car, but if you plan to ever do a track day, and given the reletively cheap cost, then it would do no harm.

There are different sizes of plastic baffle. The standard one on later cars won't fit, but the earlier, smaller one should be ok.

I fitted my windage tray at the weekend and didnt put the plastic baffle back on the oil pick up strainer on as it didnt fit - does this matter at all?

Not sure. If you're thrashing the car around a lot it might be a problem, especially if you take it on track. If you hear the oil buzzer when pushing round a long bend, you could have an oil surge problem. Try not to crash when you're testing it.
