I understand why someone with polished un laquered wheels would want to put on a set of winter wheels, but sometimes on the forum i have read people planning to put on winter wheels even when they run normal laquered alloys... why is this? Why would normal painted and laquered alloys get damaged in the winter?

i think its the whole winter thing - wet/ice/etc - more chance of damaging them due to poor weather conditions.
Plus with really nice wheels, you gotta keep them clean and take care of them - sometimes proves difficult in poor weather etc

More chance of them getting dirty etc

Salt may effect the lacquer maybe?

I think some people run winter wheels and tyres due to conditions. I would have thought that the tyres are wet weather / snow and run on much smaller wheels. Will give much better grip than some low profile 'sport' tyre that can be run in good weather.
