...and why have I never heard of one untill this year where apparently everyone has one all of a sudden. Haven't heard the term in 15 years and all of a sudden everyone has one.

For some reason its winding me up...

Early mk2's have 19 after all that vwzzz in the vin
From mid 1988 it changes to G1 when they face lifted the bodyshell

If you do a search you'll find a thread with all the differences between the two

What I've always found really odd is trying to understand the reason for the change. Theres probably more difference between my 89 "1G" and a 90 spec then there is between it an "19".

Doors have the 1/4 windows and mirrors you can't see bugger all out of too.. lol

Wiring loom different, and as you say lots more...

Sudden use of, Typ 19 is just some scenesters thinking they have a more retro car than the next bloke I think!

Aye I ditched the 1/4 windows door on mine when I fitted big bumpers
Mine also had a later rear panel with the badge in the middle fitted after someone ran up the ass of it

I really like the first mk2
Given all the actual downfalls of the 1/4 windows I prefer them
In fact we have an 84 mk2 gti in white (of course) and are trying to source the correct doors and mirrors/ windows to put back as some buffoon has put later doors on it...

Type 19 is a term (which I find very annoying ) often used to described the first Gtis which had the seven slat grill, 1/4 windows, different rear badges lhd windscreen wipers further back mirrors and different trims, in reality they also include most cars up to a year short of 90 spec big bumpers....blooming scene pants [:D]

This is absolutely, unequivocally, my most hated 'trend' of all time. It's knocked those stupid Tamigotchi things off the top spot.

    Totally ridiculous.
