...just go for the plunge and get a NEW one from VW?
To give a bit of history, i've had a total of 4 replacement gearboxes in my car over the period of about 4 years from the same company.
They've finally put the right type in after 3 wrong attempts (should be an AUG), but it feels notchy as hell, and takes all the fun out of driving.
As far as they're concerned, the gears work so theres nothing wrong.
I REALLY like a smooth soft fast gearchange, to me it makes the car- is the only way to do this by buying a new one?
Has anyone had a 'recon' box which drives like new?
In my experience they're all botched together hackboxes designed to do the job for a couple of years.
Do I really need to spend a grand to nail this? The rest of the car is in superb condition so a poor gearbox sticks out like a sore thumb.
    Cheers,
    Dan

Err..... go to a different company to have it rebuilt? They are obviously doing it wrong. A rebuilt box should be as good as, if not better than, a new box - because the gears are already worn to each other. Try Hotgolf or Fozzy Bear on here, they both do rebuilds.

    Thanks chaps,

I've done it now....Ran out of patience.
I'm the proud owner of a new VW gearbox and clutch, very very nice indeed.
    OK, I'm skint, but happy.
Drives like a different car (sort of)
    Bye for now,
    Dan. [%]

Well i KNOW i can get a gearbox for much cheaper than 1000 quids. I know it doesnt put any value on the car, but i plan to get another 100k out of this thing before it pops off.
Been shafted too many times by dodgy reconners, and im not a mechanic so im likely to be shafted again (and again)
I wish i knew good trustworthy places around here that didnt insist on screwing you for cost AND messing up the job - never found in 8 years of driving this gti around.
Dont know what a quaife is? Faster?
Its a totally boggo car but goes way fast enough for me.
Still, I like the idea of a 6th cog for Europe hrrrggrmmmmm :p ...........

    Thanks Prof,

On the bright side, I dont mind paying homage (read 'money') to the great car-god VW once in a while to thank them for making such a wonderful creation as the mk2 gti!
    Cheers,
    Dan

Come on lads, leave him alone. It's not fair to take the p1ss and he's happy anyway.
A lot of people are getting ripped off with gearbox rebuilds so i can understand why people go and spend a fortune at the dealers.
