so, im over in ireland at the moment and my mate found it quite amusing when i went through members motors and showed hr a few of the mk2 and mk1 golfs that people are proud of. a few of her friend are into the car scene, but they all insist on having new cars etc and apparently i'd be laughed at if i told them i'd be happy to own such an old car. so, my question is, who is there in ireland on the forum with a mk2 or older golf that they are proud to be seen driving in? i know there will be loads!
I dont know about that mate, I know plenty of people in Ireland that are into old jap cars somethin awful, S13s n Corolla AE86s are a couple of the biggest cars in the scenes there. Maybe whoever your with would laugh but Ireland is just as much into older cars as we are, if not moreso
Ah mate , there's a huge Retro Car scene here , just with the **** infrastructure , and bad roads , a lot of people prefer newer cars for the (assumed) Reliability aspect , as daily drivers . Also in the last few years We dragged ourselves out of an economic downturn , and normal Joe-Soaps suddenly had disposable income , so Common folk could now afford New Cars. I love my Mk1 , got a few good mates with Mk2's , other mates with RWD Escorts , Corolla AE86s , RWd Starlets , Datsuns , Fiats etc etc etc. Just most of them are "second cars".
I'm not in Ireland, but I will say I do get stick at work for having an old car, even if it is my weekend thing - other cars in the work carpark are a Civic Type-R 53plate, Astra 1.8 57 plate, PT Crusier 52 plate and a mondeo 58 plate...the boss always says "your car ain't worth a light" and "why do you waste money/time on it"...if only they understood. Personally, I don't give a crap what anyone thinks
Errr...not trying to point the thread in any direction, just stating the fact that a lot of people don't get the "old car" thing....
no I know, but theres a never ending list of threads of where people say such n such doesnt understand, the original post was whether or not there was a scene as such for older cars in Ireland, of which there is a massive scene. We all know no1 understands, thats why I said its probably the people that he was with that would laugh rather than the majority of people into modded cars in Ireland
No prob, not seen many threads on the topic myself, but hey. Also, I think Bula's a "she". At least that was the case when I used to be a regular poster
ha, cheers bobby! yeah, i happen to be female, she doesnt know of the retro car scene (i think she's in denial)... but yeah, since we've been out this morning i've seen a whole load of jap stuff. boo.
shame , only the other weekend there was an annual VW show.. http://www.driver.ie/forum/showthread.php?t=66811&highlight=411 http://www.driver.ie/forum/showthread.php?t=66811
i know a few people who well and truely beleive a car really has to be as young as possible for it to be cool haha we all must have "mature" tastes my golf is only 13, so its a baby compared to some of yours
I was under the impression that Ireland was home to more ex-works Rally cars and rare collections than the UK. As for less exotic stuff, there are plenty of Mercedes 190 owners over there, one of them has the good fortune to own one of only 502 2.5-16 Evolutions:
that merc, is nice. ive not seen much unusual stuff while ive been here, but why is the vauxhall sign different?
Because if you're over the border in the south, they were sold as Opels... Vauxhall Nova = Opel Corsa.
I have seen a 190 Evo in Essex last year it was on a back of a lorry not sure it had broken down or was being taken somewhere. I was in Donegal in June I saw more old and new Jap cars then anything else including a immaculate Corolla AE86 a few starlets turbos, old and new type R's, Subaru's etc. the only old VAG car i saw was a Corrado with a body kit.
