Did anyone see it last night? quite basic stuff and questions (coming from an amature like myself lol)
I switched it off half way through, total joke, basic stuff, more applicable to cars from the 80’s. The technology today moving at a furious rate, and they had them wiring in a simple immobiliser switch WTF??? I thought it would be better to give them something that would combine modern diagnostics and also the quality of their work.
at the end they had to modify an escort each by fitting new sparkys an exhaust and a halfords style air intake lol, they also stripped the car to lose weight (which did the most to make the car faster), 1 sparky was bent on each set but only 1 guy checked so his mods made a difference the other guy didnt so all the mods did f all lol
same as Daz!, Switched on half way and exactly same thoughts basic wiring faults and kill switch, disused it in work. The current apprentice, and the 2 previous apprentices would struggle with most of the tasks in that time the tuning up an old escort for the final task, should of gone to the other the lad for having a smarter work ethic, he just missed the planted faulty plug. Checking new plugs is something I've tried drumming into lads when they've worked with me but never happens
I was trying to think of more suitable tasks toady that would hopefully show the quality of their work, one was a diesel engine cam belt change on something that was fitted with a vernier pulley or one where the cam sprocket was fitted on a taper. Give them the car with the timing slightly out and see if they bother to set the fine adjustment or just mark the old one and swap the belts, it’s amazing how much paint and tipex I come across under the cam belt covers, as is the number of cam belts that are “close but not right”
Yep - it was dire... If these are the best 5 young mechanics the UK can produce then we are in trouble... More of a reason to stick with 80's / 90's VW's though!
They're the kind of cretins I went to college with... I was the only person to actually pass that course at all
my neck hurts from shaking my head at the tv, what a load of cr*p, only saving grace was the that at least the most talented mechanic won thou I think I would of done better than most of them!
Exactly the same as I thought, and the only mechanical training I've ever had is an evening class when I first started driving. All but one of the tasks revolved around wiring (fitting a kill switch - that's basic DIYer stuff!), and the mechanical work they did do was bloody basic. I reckon they should have gotten something they'd never seen the likes of before, say a 2 stroke from the Eastern Bloc or China, so they actually had to think about how the problems might be solved, as opposed to "look for what's obviously been disconnected / mangled".
I forgot this was on.... sounds like they might have been as useless as me lol I should have entered......but Im not young anymore [:^(]
I just watched some of this on iPlayer. What an absolute load of crap. They should of been asked to find the wiring problems in my Golf, would of took them years.
my thoughts precisely...that man wants imprisoned for some of the stuff he's done. My abiding memory is him always insisting "cut the f@cking springs" whenever fitting absurd modded suspension. ****.
Utter sheite this programme was, I know 18 year old apprentice mechanics in dealer who would destroy those guys. The test were carp as they do not reflect anything any young techie is likely to come across. The suggestions above relating to cambelt changes or something simliar would have been much more appropriate. More TV crap and not done the BBC any favours.
