DVLA calls everything a saloon I think. I have the DVLA lookup in work and almost all cars show as a saloon unless its a cab!
My Golf one says Hatchback, It is a new V5 form though, perhaps they have recently changed it... My Jetta one strangely enough says saloon!
I have the letter from the DVLA explaining it. When VW first released the Mk2 Golf GTI they did not class it as a hatchback, so the DVLA wouldn't list it as one as in theory it didn't exist. After a few years VW agreed that Golf's where indeed hatchbacks and the DVLA would then change the V5 to say so if you requested. Mine was changed by the 2nd owner of the 3 it has had.
