Hey! Basically i can`t afford to insure a GTi so i`m going for a 1.6 driver for a year then doing a (snidy ;) ) engine swap. Slightly illegal but only if you get caught. (you may wonder why i don`t just do it straight away then but TBH i don`t trust myself as i`m not a very experienced driver, i need training!)
Are there any differences between a driver chassis and a GTi chassis bearing in mind i`ll be replacing the springs? In other words what am i going to have to do to the rest of the car to make it a GTi? Cheers! :)

Brakes (rear discs) and better front's.
I'd save the cash and buy a 8v gti now. :)

you will be better off selling the driver and buying a GTi at the end of the year........
will cost a fortune to swap engines etc....you will need fuel pumps....lift and main the lines....etc....
to much work for the cost....
    BUY A GTI

Can`t afford to insure a GTi. Think i`ll just mod the 1.6 until i have my no-claims. How much power can you actually get out of the 1.6 lump with gti camshaft, webbers etc.? Thanks

    Dr...

For the love of god do not do an Engine swap then not tell the insurance, not only that will be void. But your V5 will be aswell.

Don't even mod the Driver, its got enough go to go anywhere really.

Get a GTI and plonk it in the drive whilst you work on it.

dont bother modifying drivers, they're slow as feck, ask Richgit

on a more serious note, get one over 15yrs old and get classic car insurance, thats what ive done to get insurance costs down. ok I got a mk1 but some mk2s can be put under classic insurance as well. did have to go for lmtd mileage as well but hey ho.

I'm driving around in a 1.3 till i can afford another VR swap.

Plan for the future and save your penny's, you can get a better GTI in the end.

I tried to insure an 8v GTi with HIC but they wanted me to be 25 for a GTi! Is there anywhere that will insure an 18/19 year old on a classic policy?
I`m hoping i`ll be able to pick up a cheap 1.8 driver (<500) failing that its the good `ol 1.6 Either way its my first car so i don`t really care. There both beter than a nova/corsa/saxo etc. :)

Totally agree, and if you hit me with void insurance, well you don't even want to consider the consequences...... [:x] [8(] [:D]

Mate try a MK1 1.6 GTI, it would only cost me about 100 more a year compared to my 1.6 driver (from Liverpool Victoria)

Biggest problem is actually finding one! [:x]

if you had a crash or got caught with void insurance you would probably get banned, and when you got your liscence back your insurance would be silly money for anything faster than a standard saxo.

ring adrian flux and get a quote for a gti there usually really good for young drivers

also my mate got a quote off tescos for a mk3 vr6 when he was 20 which was good
