Clutch basket - design and function

The system that connects the transmission to the engine during gear shifting is the clutch. The main task of this element of the vehicle is to transfer the force from the engine to the vehicle chassis.

The key clutch consumable is the basket (driving disc), attached to the engine flywheel. The construction has peculiarities. In the centre of the housing there is a lobe-loaded slave disc that is connected to the gearbox. The basket is designed to separate/connect the flywheel from the disc. In simple terms, the element is used to disengage/engage the clutch, ensuring a smooth shifting of gears.

The car clutch basket can be:

1. Depressurised. During operation, the blades move towards the flywheel.
2. Retracting. The reverse process occurs - the elements are pulled away from the flywheel.
3. This is one of the main transmission components. If it fails, the entire mechanism will no longer function adequately. This can lead to unfortunate results on the road. That's why it's important to replace the part in time.

Malfunctioning of the clutch basket

The unit may require replacement for a variety of reasons. The main thing is not to delay contacting a service station. Signs of clutch basket failure:

• The clutch does not fully engage. When shifting gears, a characteristic crackling noise is heard from the synchroniser carriages. When the clutch pedal is depressed, the master and slave discs do not separate, but start to touch.
• The discs will slip. Insufficient contact between the surfaces occurs. The discs begin to slip. As the engine speed increases, only the crankshaft accelerates. A burnt rubber smell is clearly visible.
• Unusual noise which occurs when the pedal is depressed. The release lobe or release bearing may be worn/broken. In this case the part cannot be repaired, only the unit must be replaced.
• Wear on the friction lining. At high speed, when accelerator pedal is depressed, engine revolutions will be increased and the car will remain stationary.
• The appearance of vibration when changing gear and on start-up. This indicates a defective spring in the basket.
