Needed the plastic roller (5) as it'd split, but was able to salvage the inner metal sleeve (4), listed as separate parts, both still available - https://www.deutsche-parts.co.uk/321612367-new-genuine-part.html (plastic bit only) https://www.golf1onderdelen.com/product/3630/ (both bits) Whole lot sits behind that hex bolt / washer. If your getting a new regulator, check it comes with the triangular plastic clip that fits to the other end of the spring (it's not shown on the schematic) The tension spring might be these, though the part numbers differ (191 612 339 against 171 612 339)... Werk34 state it'll fit the MK1 and MK2, the other site just states MK1... will need double checking. Axle has arrived. Not in bad shape and everything seems to be there. It will be interesting to see if this is salvageable……..thoughts?
Honestly... I'd replace it, because, well, brakes. But knowing there's new one's available, no harm in opening that one.
Tristan, you mention opening this up. It seems to be in fairly good nick on the inside of the bores so is it a case of undoing this nut and cleaning what falls out? Is it worth putting the parts in an ultrasonic cleaner?
Years since I opened one, iirc yes? I might have a duff one here, I'll root around and report back in the afternoon. Though I have a sneaky suspicion it got binned
that nut will allow the lever to come off, under that is a rubber boot which covers the return spring and operating plunger. from there you can then start to strip the valve down, never seen rebuild kits for them but if its just a load of o'rings inside can probably source generic kit and go from there
OK, so began dismantling this morning. The top nut came undone nicely after soaking over night. However, that nut does not release the lever. You have to remove the hinge pin. No way José! No amount of “persuasion” would shift it. It’s basically a cotter pin so I ground off the ends which allowed the lever to pop off either side. The pin will need to come out for a proper repair but we will see how the inside go. Rubber boot off. There are two plungers inside with a cross beam which pressed by the lever. Each has a spring. Springs removed and then there is a circling which came out easily. Now, the circling would suggest that the entire inside should come out. The plungers are stuck fast. I now have it soaking to see if anything moves, I’m not holding out much hope so new one ordered
Gubbins Jammed pivot Soaking released another metal ring. Double plungers. No movement at all at the moment so back in soak. With the hidden ring out it doesn’t look like the interior body does come out but the two bright circles may. I’m really only doing this for the challenge of dismantling it now. If goes back together and works then…….bonus.
good progress so far, but not convinced it'll go back nicely the new versions are nicked from the passat and have an ally body so dont corrode so badly, plus weight savings
Since the subject of rear stubs and hubs came up, I'm hoping for some clarification. I'm in the US, and I have some mk4 rear stubs, and ordered some 6n2 hubs from he UK. I thought the bearings were the same, but they are smaller than the stubs. Is there a bearing that works between the two? Not sure what I'm missing. I can measure them both if that helps, but it's 11 degrees outside right now.... Not sure where to look to work this out. Thanks
@boroko look at seat inca/mk2 caddy van items if wanting to convert to 4 stud, the mk4 stubs fit on mk2 caddy rear axle whereas the polo/mk2 golf are different bolt pattern. May not be compatible though, but it's a possibility. Inquisitive mind is excellent @PhilRyder , and shows us the inside of it, nice one mate.
