Or, could you join the two pipes before the proportioning valve and then split them again afterwards?

Diagonal split is the norm. Which is another reason for the original type load compensator valve, that has 2 inputs and outputs.

Any dual input adjustable valve I've seen has been very expensive.

    Yes they are.
    So what are the alternatives?
Join the two pipes, go into valve, split the two after the valve.
Have two valve, one on each line.

Pressure reduction valves an option, bit like old mini had on rear subframe to stop lock up, got a pair of valves here off a mk1 focus, an fit in line.
I'll look for them in a mo

Here they are, surprisingly quick find in my garage! 20211231_124643.jpg 20211231_124744.jpg
Plus the rear hose brackets off mk3 gti.

    That was quick!
So they are fixed pressure reduction, not adjustable? That would leave me wondering if they were the same on each line. I think I would rather fit an adjustable one on each line, at least then they could be balanced.
I’m leaning towards teeing the pipes either side of a single valve.

Dodgy, would you sell me those hose brackets?

Phil, I'd think a dual port valve, or 2 separate ones is a safer option.

Having looked at the space available under the bonnet I think this is a non starter without redoing most of the pipe work. So I am now back to thinking we need to bite the bullet and fit the standard VW compensator and bracket to the axle beam. Is this a difficult retrofit?
(I used to be indecisive but now I just can’t make up my mind……[:[] )

The other thing I’ve noticed is that the conversion kit that heritage sell does not include the compensator bracket nor the spring. In fact they don’t list the spring on their site. So this leads me to another question. Is the bracket and spring strictly necessary. I know they allow for axle loading but if I had non standard valves they wouldn’t either???????

Surely Dubstock or Retro Spares would have the bracket and spring? If not for mk2,, for a mk3 or Corrado?

I put a new aftermarket oe style valve on a car last year, it worked perfectly.

I don’t really want second hand unless I absolutely have to.
What did you use and where did you locate it.

I was just replacing the valve on GTIs tbh, Phil.
The bracket and spring s/h would be absolutely fine.

you would only source used spring and bracket bits, the valve buy new. they are still available for mk2 and mk3 (which beam was it you had again)

So, by chance I checked eBay last night and dubstock had a 1.6 beam with all the compensator bits attached. I enquired and have bought it. Should arrive on the 10th and we can start a full refresh. Chap at Dubstock replied immediately to my question on a bank holiday and was very helpful.

standard on 1.8 carb, also 1.6 automatic and diesels :) what it wont have is a roll bar, but then neither does the 1.3 beam. can just add aftermarket roll bars then sorted
