    Hi,
ive a mk2 1.8 16v, what sort of economy with normal driving can i expect from this? MFA reads between 27 and 29mpg sitting on the m-way in at about 70 mph
    cheers Gav

that's about right- maybe a little low - (but then i never sat at 70..)

might be worth getting cam timing, ign timing and mixture checked

(and it's always worth taking it into stealth for a rolling road setup)

    thats vr6 fuel consumption !!

You should be getting more like 35mpg out of it; your not
exactly thrashing it at 70 after all.

Yeah that not right you should see 34-36 on a run like that, As per dex`s comments get the basic settings checked. My VR6 does 31-32mpg on the motorway with light prods of the go pedal

That sounds similar economy to my 16v, which I think is a little low to be honest. On a long run I sometimes see over 30mpg on the MFA but not much.

Best to try working out consumption from litres of petrol put in and distance driven as the MFA could be wrong. That's what I'm going to do. :)

I tried resetting my MFA at a constant 50mph last night on the way home from work. It read in the 30's, up to about 35mpg until I had to accelerate, stop, start etc at junctions.

Is this about right then? (mk2 16v)

This is one of the main reasons I drive an 8v digi. I get 30ish when I absolutely hammer it. 40+ cruising at 60-65.

hows about nearly 50 mpg driven at steady 60mph !!

    (mk2 with mk3 2.0L block and standard 1.8L gti head - k jet)
 hasn't got the top end of 16 v though - not even close.

    31 - 35 is great considering the 16valve 140 bhp

Over in the States I'm averaging about 40MPG and that's city driving. On the highway I've seen upwards of 47MPG and that's about 70MPH. I use Premium (91 Octane) at all times, but I'm not sure if that makes a bit of difference!

I know the readings are only averages but are they usualy pretty accurate? I'm kinda hoping there not, or else I'm only doing about 12mpg. This has bugged since I bought the old gal ('90 16v), as some people seem to be getting readings that are half believable. Even in check mode the real-time read out has never gone higher than 14.9mpg.

    Hi,

My 1992 Mk2 16v has just been serviced, idle reset and new exhaust, but even at 70mph, my MFA has never reads over 31-32mpg. However, I tried running it to the point where it would hardly start rolled into the garage, put in 35 of Optimax and that got me just under 300mph, then working it out from the petrol prices and the mileage, it came to 30mpg on a mixed run!! Think MFA is quite accurate, but my consumption is never great and car runs sweetly!!
