No it has to be a mk2 head, you cant fit the mk2 manifolds to the mk3 heads

    Thats what i'd suggest yeah.

You could get a proper kent cam instead of the gti cam, would see a bit more power - but again, would need to port the head for real benefits.

cos insurcance is a female dog,

i could easily aford to by a decent 16v gti,

    just cant afford the insurance,

i also intend to get a mk1 gti to make in to a bit of a street sleeper,

not if they dont know about it,

i cant lie about what a car is, (reg plate) but i can change the internals of an engine and to the untrained eye it will look the same,

That's true, but if a potential claim warrants it (i.e. in the event of a serious accident) they may well decide to strip the engine down and then you'll be up that well know creak without a paddle!!

Bl**dy cheek of it  It was my first time porting a head, and I think I did a damn good job, needle files or not, judging by the power output [:x]

Come to think of it, im not even sure what I used the needle files for, oh yeah, used them to do any finishing touches on the casting before I sanded it all with fine grit paper... [:s]

Having the head ported was the best thing I done to the engine, apart from the weber carb. A bloke I know ported the head, inlet manifold and fitted a piper cam, with new followers, etc for 300, which is good value I reckon. You can really feel it work at the top end. Depending how much money you want to spend, it might be worth skipping the gti cam and get a fast road kent and piper cam to go with the head.

As for insurance, I run a modified 8v carb and the insurance is four times as less as a 16v golf. Even with every mod included, with a power output of around 130bhp, as well as being able to fit a roll cage and nitrous later, it was cheaper than an 8v gti. HIC were quoting over 2000 for a 16v golf, and many companies wouldn't even give me a quote.
