Been looking for a MK2 GTI, and have noticed that the 5 doors seen to be a lot cheaper.

I'm not a massive fan tbh, and am looking for a 3dr.

What do you think about 5 doors?

I guess its kind of a like a marmite subject. Personally I like 3 door Mk2's but I don't particularly hate 5 door ones. I guess its personal taste.

5 doors are the spawn of satan. IMO of course.

However, they have their fans on here. ;) (Cue 5 door massive)

They can look OK but a 3dr will always look better to me. Guess its just considered more sporty.

Prefer the 5 door. More convenient and according to a certain person on here, a slightly stiffer chassis aswell.

Who says that? Is that with, or, without a sunroof?
I want to see some authenticated numbers!

Wouldn't a 5dr be heavier? Just install front and rear strut braces in a non sunroof, won't any stiffer than that.

5 door must have more chassis flex due to another break in between the B and C pillar and is heavier.

3 doors are definately more desirable - they just are! Thats coming from me owning a 5 door too. If I had spent more money and more time looking then I would have bought a 3 door but the right car at the right price came up but the downside, if you can call it that, was that it has 2 extra doors!

Doesn't bother me that much really as it still looks good, but a 3 door looks better!

5 doors work nicely if they're not gti's-Even better if they're pre 88 spec and nicely modded with retro/period parts.

The sportier look of the gti's just works better with the cleaner body of the 3dr imo

More practical for shopping, moving stuff etc. Heavier I'm sure than a 3 door, but a 5 has much better 'access' for when you need to make use of the back seat.

I'm too old to worry about "making use of" the back seat anymore!

I have a 5 door track car and couldn't care less how many doors it has.

Get the best car you can for your money, that's way more important. No point spending more on a car which will need more work just because it has less doors. [8-}]

I got a '91 Oak Green 16v 99k miles, 100% original, no rust, 600. Try and find a 3 door like that for the money, they would have all been dogs.

    Again, just my opinion [:D]

Depends how much you want a 3 door or if your not bothered., I did just want a 3 door, although the prices of the 5 doors did sometimes get to me!

I prefer the look of a 3 door but I love my 5 door especially since I paid very little money for it and its not bad at getting the kids in the back. I think 5 doors look even worse modified with bigger wheels etc... look better stock but then again so do 3 doors.

also i recently discovered that its handy having a rear door to open especially when you are trying to wedge a corrado bonnet in it from the back

Best piece of advice you can give on the subject imo!

I was originally looking for a 3 door but then my 5 door came up in the right place at the right time for less money than a 3 door would cost! Its much more important to buy a mk2 on body condition these days imo

ive got 2 5 door gti's and i love them, yes the 3 dr looks a bit sleeker but so what, to make my main project car look a bit sleeker ive just had the rear door handles deleted which looks amazing but still keeps the practicality, not very practical to put you hand through the front to get the rear open but its not impossible.
