Pointless to you maybe. Thankfully, the world also has its inventors.

2L VW engines are still fitted to a lot of superb F3 cars - from the 1980's to being used in the european F3 series this year - I cannot think of a better place for a billet block as soon as the regs would allow

But I'm sure you knew that.

I like your thinking:thumbup: , looks like were both going down similar roads......I'm trying to gather lots of info on the tourer engines as Chris pointed out the link earlier.

not 100% sure yet how far a standard block can be taken out, in the process of tracking down a knackered ABF to butcher:)

    good luck with your build!

fair play if it's to fit into a specific race class, and you are limited to engine choice. however if it's just for a laugh then why not start with something with huge bores in the 1st place?

    e30 m3 runs 95mm bores for example

M3 cranks from 87 mm to 72.6 mm. available

quite a few turboed up to 800bhp etc,

interesting if RobT can run a 1.4 turbo in the same class as a 2.0 atmo, the turbo would murder it for torque

Throttle response for the tighter tracks.. ATMO power all day long..

M3 still not particlurly 'square' in realtion of bore to stroke then..?

nope just designed for 10k rpm and big power, most passenger cars are configured with small bores to help the packaging/engine length and promote torque in "NORMAL DRIVING"

not entirely relevant but a 10k rpm, destroked 20v with twin turbos big enough to suck in passing cars. same block essentially.
I was always told 83.5mm was as big as they go before you start cracking walls. liners required beyond that I would have thought.
I can see why destroking is important but is the extra 100+cc's worth the effort when its going to be nutty revs and turbo anyway?

So if an Audi V8 has 84.5mm pistons as standard, and Golf 16V heads are supposed to be one bank of an Audi V8, what are we missing here?

In theory the cylinder centres are the same. Are Audi V8 blocks the usual cast items?

That`s a little on the thin side between the bores for my liking!, what`s the reliability like?.

reliability must be fine if audi are prepared to launch them with full warranty and a life expectancy well over 100k
