As per title anyone using these on track, what do you think of them compared with road tyres like Goodyear F1's/Toyo Proxes? Whats the wear rate like? They are around 260 for a set of 4 on ebay but for that money you can almost get 8 F1/T1R's. I will be running them on my mk1 16v. Thanks for your thoughts/opinions Nic
They're far better than a std road tyre on track (as are the Yokohama A048R equivalents), although may be less good than the F1 in the wet.. It's more a question of whether you want to get into the expense of running such tyres. Once you're in, you won't got back! Normally a set is in the region of 400 pounds (15")
Chris, the Toyos are a lot cheaper tha Yoko's - As Nic said you can get them off eBay for 260 (195/50x5) , then you've got to get 'em fitted. Nic, we used them on a mates (IV mk1 16v on here) mk1 last weekend at the 'ring, there's a few videos kicking about on here including an 8:51 BTG in the Golf.. He did 2500 inc 3 track days in France with them on an mx5, then put them on the Golf and we did 25 laps of the 'ring in wet and dry. Drove to 'ring and back on normal road tyres. The R888s still have road legal tread...
Yeah the Toyo R888's in 195/50/15 are 260 inc delivery i think, fitting is only a tenner. Hmm i suppose they've got to be worth a go
This a good advert for those tyres... mk1 16v Golf @ the 'ring last weekend http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=COdjeiww0I0 I've got a new set on the mk2, sadly they will never wear out at this rate.
The R888's are great tyres, i got them for 77 each fitted from my local tyre dealer. much cheaper than the yoko 048's used them at the ring for 26 laps and they still have loads of tread on them, loads of grip in the dry and pretty good in the wet. much much better than road tyres
Bought 8 for a mate and I, 60quid each delivered, then took to be fitted to loose track wheels. Comparable grip to A048r, and I reckon they're better in the damp than the no-grip-at-all yokos. Not driven in proper wet tho. Ran higher pressures at 30ish psi, and they balled a lot less than the yokos which should bode well for wear rates. So far so good.
I use them on my mk1 16v and have done 4 sprints and one trackday on them and they seem to be wearing well - no road miles though. They are in a different league from road tyres as Chris said above, and although perhaps not as good as T1R's/F1's in the wet, I still found them to offer reasonable grip. But, like all trackday/slick tyres I have driven on, when you do lose grip, it is no where near as progressive as a road tyre. I got mine from Camskill on a "special" offer and were similar prices to above, think I was 260 for the four in 15" 195x50
How do these compair to the performance of the Dunlop D01J or the new D02G's? I have run these in the past and the level of grip they offer is eye watering.
I guess no one has used all these type of tyres as well as the R888s hence why no response? The Dunlop race/trackday tyres are double the price of the R888s for a start.
I know they are cheaper but I was wondering if anyone had tried both? I suspect the R888's are cheaper as they offer less performance.
I was chatting to Steve Scott at Cadwell, he uses the Dunlops in the Ford saloons, he said "They turn into lumps of jelly after 5 laps"
Not tried the 888`s myself, a friend used them on his E30 M3 and was impressed - he then changed to Avon ACB10`s and was blown away with the improvement over the Toyos. I use the DO1J`s on the Mk2 and find them excellent both on the road and track; so too the A032R`s I run on the Mk1.
