Well looking at it this morning in a non-inflammatory way, I guess I agree with Motorhead ;)

You cant really compare chalk & cheese..I suppose I just prefer the older cars as they are lighter & have so much more character...

Il admit to being a mk2 nut ;) ....maybe Il grow up one day & appreciate the finer things in life [:$] , but bought it as a HOT Hatch & it does exactly what it says on the tin ;)

None of the cars above are for everyday use, and most are far to expensive to run. If you like them, that cool. If I had a bottomless pit of money, I would own all sorts of cars and not even bat an eyelid at running costs, but living in the real world, with a mortgage and family to support, choices become limited.

Most people's problem with the TT is one of image. They're too often
driven by mincers more interested in their haircut than how to drive
the car. Its a very clean smart design, with good all-round abilities.
It may not be amazingly capable on a track, but most cars that would be
quicker on a circuit would lose out in other areas. Would you want to
drive hundreds of miles a week, pick up a girl you just met, or do a
bit of 'press on' driving on a sleety bumpy b-road in a Mk2 Golf with a
rollcage, hard as nails suspension and bucket seats?

I'd have a TT if I didn't need a bloody great boot to fill with kit for
work. A number of mates have older dubs that will beat my Bora both in
a straight line and round a track, for a quarter of its value, but its
no surprise which car we're taking to europe this spring.

WTF have I done?! I have only posted 3 times in this thread. Once to state the FACT that a modded TT could beat a standard Mk 2 on track (in response to the statement that a modded Mk 2 could beat a standard TT). Twice to state the FACT that Rob's not after a track car and that a TT is perfectly adequate for road use.

Nothing wrong with stating FACTS and I'd like to know how I'm being a "school kid" and "bringing this forum down".[:[]

can get LHD ones of these for 16k, makes a mk2 and a TT look silly
    both off and on track

oh and in the 3 years we have had ours its cost less to maintain than a
1.4 auto polo. downside, u need shares in BP

A fact would have evidence to back up a theory.
I see no evidence to support this theory.

I agree that it is a very reasonable assumption and opinion - but it is not fact.

a fair argument going on here, just an update on my situation,

Im going to look at a TT on the weekend, its a 225 BHP that has been chipped to 245 apparently, i want one because i think they are stylish, and refined.

Also my Mk2 electric windows and mirrors are going on ebay as there are too heavy for a track Mk2 :)

    Whatever.

Where's the evidence that says a Mk 2 is faster then?

This isn't about what's quicker on track anyway. It's about what's best for road use but it seems that this seems to have fallen on deaf ears.

I actually think the TT looks like a car thats been designed for the "style conscious" first and everything else afterwards. And in my opinion that makes it look cheap. Its a car my mum would want because it looks nice, and she wouldnt care about how it drives.

As for driving experiences I reckon theres a lot better to be had than a mk4 golf in a frock. I havent driven one but cmon, thats what it is and nobody raves about mk4 handling.

IF IT WAS ME I'd be removing the old vw blinkers and looking outside of the VAG range. VWs are good because you can get great weell built drivers cars for not a lot of money and that stops applying in this price bracket when the competition is new enough not to have rotted away.

Well I'm sick to death of this thread now. It's gone way off topic.

I've been accused of "bringing the general section down like a school kid" when most of the handbags that have been thrown about in this thread have been by other people and most of the toys have been thrown out of the pram by other people, but I don't see them being accused of acting like schoolkids. I for one have attempted to put an opinion/perspective/whatever across but because some people seem to have a problem with other people in my region I've been tarred with the same brush.

So I'm not going to get involved in this pooe anymore. I'll let you all carry on with this playtime banter and I'll go and find some adult discussion somewhere else[:D]

And just for the record, I like the TT but wouldn't buy one because they're just not practical enough for me :)

I dunno ya try and bring it back on topic and then people start b1tching again

BTW my points about mk4 golfs didnt include the R32, which is saved by its v(r)6 engine IMO.
