I purchased a new tensioner bolt from Audi today and replaced just now.. Car idles fine, maybe a tiny bit lumpy like always, but has a very worrying noise if you rev and take your foot off the throttle - a kind of rattling over-run sound. Is this my worst fears realised.. chain skipped a tooth or something else?! Here is a video I took just now. The marbles in a tin sound has pretty much disappeared on idle, but left with another dodgy sound, please listen on proper speakers if possible;
I can't believe how you all made it so complicated. Find someone with VCDS, enter 01-engine, measuring blocks, check group 208 and 209 on idle Those are your cams. 3th window in each group is the offset. ECU measures -8* to +8* After timing chain service those values should be very close to 0 (+ /-1) In your case they are probably off (guessing 4-5*) so your timing chain is extended a bit. The sound is not clear because it is a video (and it is hard to judge) but for me it sounds like time for a timing chain service. Important - it always takes some time before the tensioner is full with oil! Never rev your engine after tensioner replacement. I used to idle VR engines after timing chain service for at last 15-20min.
It did quit down after a run and is quit at idle but has a new noise which he thinks is one of the chain guides If you look he dose have VCDS and did measure the can timing it's in the first post Think he is looking for peace of mind and has booked it in to get the chain done at a well know vw specialist I don't blame him at least he will know it's all good I know of at least 2 mk4 r32's that snapped chains at around 50k If it was me I wouldn't have worried about the noise at idle I'm sure mine is the same when hot My engine has less than 40k on it
Dam... how could I skip the line in the first post - my mistake. MUSHY 16V - I'm 9 years in this business and I never had snapped timing chain in an engine with such low millage, anyway when you see over 5* offset it's time to service it. Service is cheaper than 3.2l head From my experience - on idle you can clearly hear the "stretched chain noise" or the chain guides No matter what it is you should replace both. Millage is not always the reason of noisy timing chain. Tomorrow I'll post a picture of a worn gearwheel caused by ... poor quality oil (offset was only 4*).
Aye bud pictures of the small cog wheel would be good have seen one in the past scary stuff The problem with a lot of r32's was they were on a long life service A friend bought one like that low milage chain timing miles out light came on just after he got it Sold it cheap with the chain kit to get shot
