My MK2 16V jas an Auto clutch cable, I can push the leaver on the box down about 3-4", dowes this mean it's knackered and i need to replace it (Manual one of course) :)

If this is the case, would it have cause my problem of when i am pulling off it's like i get a clutch slip for a second and then it's fine in 1st gear, like the power to the wheels is cut for a second and the car kangaroos. the clutch is ok though i have tested this!

Push it down 4 - 5 times and it should tighten up.

    Thanks

Do you mean push the leaver down, then press the clutch pedal down a few times and repaet that 5 times?

Ok each time i push it down, it springs back up and i can't push it down again until i press the clutch pedal, is this right???? It seems to make no difference :(

Also i noticed on top of the auot adjusting bit on the cable there is like a plastic butterfly clip, which clips to the bottom of the auto adjusting part - compressing the spring on the cable, once this is on, the clutch prdal just springs forward and stays there untill i pull it back again, again is this right?

Just trying to figure out if it's all as it should be

    That's the plan :)

So is it the auto clutch cable that is causing the slip in first? Is it possible or common on these that when the clutch is engaged and the cable is coming back that it slips?

That's what seems to happen, the faster the worse it is, very slow and i can avoid it, but that's no fun!

it could be, new manual clutch cable is always the first step when diagnosing gearbox/clutch problems anyway :)

That'll be for a self-adjust cable, you want the manual one:
    71566 CLUTCH CABLE G2 1.8 8v F.Inj 8/83 >7/89 8.75

I can't remember what the kit is, but i changed mine in their car park and didn't need anything else.
Depends on if they've changed the design etc of the cable since i did mine (urm, 6years ago).

The 89-90 MK2s are the same, VW just stopped fitting manual clutch cables :)
As for the fitting kit, its just the bits on the end of the clutch arm, non of which you need to replace unless you loose em!
