Right chaps. Plan on doing some measurments later today. Been looking more towArds the scch kit http://www.scch-heads.com/viewpart.php?id=47 Im thinking this is probably the safer option but were do I stand in terms on safety or the possibilty of scrutenering at a track day, read on another forum that someone drove to the ring and were told he could not drive for the similar setup up Can cast steel be welding? MOT wise were would I stand? Would I be better with high quality extenders instead?
Welding cast steel. http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/cast-steel.htm MOT wise should be fine, but if i remember right all spherical rod ends/bearings are to have dust/dirt covers now.
looking at ball joint extenders myself... for road use.. so it seems the thing to do is weld them onto the hub for extra strength which is fine.. should i do a Tie rod flip too? or does that depend on how low you go? another thing is im worried about bending/damaging wishbones when i park on curbs (they sit lower so are more likely to catch right?) also is there anywhere else you can buy these? the ebay seller in the OP has ended!
If you use extenders, you'll need to flip the tie rods. I'm about to do mine. The arms won't be low enough to catch on curbs. Does anyone know the thread for the tie rods, as well as the size of the hole required in the hub?
Yeah, just drill out the taper. But I'm hoping someone knows the size without me having to dismantle everything, measure it, order it, realise I've got it wrong, and do it all again. lol
Only place I have found to get both items is from SCCH in the States: http://scch-heads.com/displayparts.php?makeID=3&modelID=18 I would have bought them but found the guy quite hard to deal with.
I got the tie rod flip kit from Compbrake, excellent service. I already had the extenders so can't help there.
Snapped ball joint extension near miss at croft At Croft last friday the n/s extension snapped coming down the main pit straight nearly hitting the wall , would recommend not using these bought from ebay
Ouch much damage? Welcome to the club Adam Sorry that your first post is about a nasty failure What's your ride?
Oh holy crap, that's a terrifying thought! I once had a ball joint sheer on my Mini at low speeds and that was scary enough. I can imagine at speed it'd be horrific. Glad to hear the wall WASN'T hit. Good lesson to others there to avoid cheap components in safety critical locations
cheers lads, they was not cheap at 100 ! the guy doesnt seem to be selling these any more but im going to message him to see what he says
heres the car being rescued from the circuit, going to make my own ball joints now which i should of in the first place
And after long few years of telling him Adam is finally here on forum! Did oil cooler work ok in its location? Also feel free to update mk1 build thread i started many moons ago
Just an idea here guys rather than making or buying extenders what's to stop us doing a group buy and getting some long pin ball joints made by a uk ball joint manufacturer ? There's still a few about who offer to make them. Ball joint extenders cost say 100 a ball joint ??? 10 each So suspension geometry problems are very common say it costs 40 each joint to have some specials made or modified to cure a common problem? Sparrow prawn nige brian g your thoughts on this please Sorry forgot Hummuh toolol
