Also trucks do need to be efficient due to only doing 6 to 9 mpg.Ive also done some tests on tdi coolers and found them to be very good only dropping 1 psi at 14psi

yes but what mass flow did you use through the IC you tested? You need the equivalent of 16-odd litres equivalent mass flow at rated speed.
Diesel's have comparatively low mass flows to gasolines due to the much lower rated speeds,so when you go to those rated speeds on a gasoline using a Diesel IC you are operating outside of it's efficiency range. Additionally the shorter cycle time constant means that air velocities will be increased substantially - the original IC core will be specc'd to cope with typical Diesel air velocities and flow capabilities and beyond this you'll see increased pressure drop across the cooler.

It'll be well worth your while looking on uk-mkivs or sc.net then cos there are guys who have done exactly what you wanted to do. Can't do better than find out how it works in the real world.

I use 30psi boost and a boost gauge b4 and after i also had temp probe to measure temp drop the higher the temp drop generally speaking the more the pressure drop from what i found,i understand what your saying about the production intercooler is a compromise but diesel ive found offer a better option than the std petrol cooler.

you just have to love replies like this,

Simon i think he's talking pressure vs flow

on a deisel it's only going to rev to 4k max, on a petrol motor running to 7k, there is a lot more air being pumped, greater "mass flow" as his royal homlessness puts it....i think

I too am looking for an intercooler for a 1.8t conversion, a bit confused by all the talk here !!

I have been told by several sources that a Mercedes Sprinter intercooler fits, haven't been able to get a price or a picture of one to see what they look like though!

fits but wasn't designed for a high revving petrol engine

cosworth ones are designed for a similar spec engine and are cheap as owt on e-bay,

thanks prof, Are you talking about the escort cossie intercoolers, sierra cossie intercooler, or the propper 3 door sierra cossie ones? (allways wanted one of these!)

I must admit I had my doubt about the air flow speed of a deisel intercooler as like you say they can't be designed for such high revving as found in petrol cars.

    cheers

there are a few people running sprinter intercoolers and they seem happy, but as TT says it was never designed for a 200bhp petrol engine going to 7k, and he knows eleventy million miles more about this than me

ive heard a heater matrix makes a good IC

anyway, tis indeed a good read.
