Mk1 (&2?) drums (incl inner bearing + outer race): 4.3kg each Complete with backplate, bearings + internals incl stub axle: 6.4kg each (need to double check shoes are inside though) As an aside, Mk2 rear caliper excl pads & excl carrier: 2.5kg each Mk4 to follow
I have both in stock here so will get around to weighing them. I was going to try and get the whole setup from axle outwards. For both the mk2 / 3 style, and the mk4 tyle as they have a different hub / disc arrangement.
I've weighted 2nd hand alu Mk4 callipers at 1350 gr, other from replacement market at 1150 gr. In discs: 256x20 front 4 suds mk2 16V drilled 4260 gr 280 x 22 front grooved on alu center 4 studs: 4800 gr. 239 x 20 Zimmermann drilled 3670 gr
You could do Matt. I have also got a decent set of 288s, but they are on the car, so would be good to get a weight up on the table, I will compare them when I take mine off and "upgrade" too 280s.
Non-Oem brake disc weights Had the opportunity to weigh my front discs from the Mk2 today on Danster-calibrated digi scales. The discs are 300 x 26mm on an alloy bell, as part of the Tar-Ox 6pot kit for 16" wheels (code KMVW0153). *stock image from TSR site Disc came in at 5.4kgs, quite surprised compared to the table above According to the Tar-Ox website, the 6-pot calipers are 2.2 kgs each
mk3 diesels (GL:1Z) have bigger drums on the back. I have a car to strip soon so will weigh one and advise. Great thread
Braking Component Weights The title is a bit expansive, but have left it a bit open so it can be added to, and it could grow into something useful for people. Had some Wilwoods arrive today, so was looking at starting to work out some basic dimensions for the brackets, got a bit distracted and started weighing some of the commonly used mk2/3 oe front brake components. Lucas type 54 (proper g60/280 type, not mk2 16v/256), with carrier and apx 80% used pads MK3 gti 288mm caliper, with carrier and as new 400 mile pads. Brembo Ibiza cupra R 4 pot with carrier and 95% worn pads and flexi Wilwood Dynalite with carrier (non vw fit but close enough for a weight comparison), new redstuff pads and flexi Mk2 gti 8v 239mm vented, grooved disc Mk2 gti 16v 256mm vented std disc G60 golf/rado/rallye 280mm grooved, vented disc 288mm drill/grv disc almost new MK4 golf platform 312mm vented std disc 305mm 2pc ap rotor and bell for Ibiza cupra R Brembos I`ll add some more . If anyone else wants to add weights from stuff they have, feel free. Could be extended to include hubs. I was surprised by some of the weights I may be over estimating how helpful people may find this, but with a bit more depth it could be a useful resource, in helping identify combinations of brake set ups for weight and budget conscious builds alike.
Nice info and data Bryn. There's a fair bit on discs on this thread also. Merge perhaps? The Wilwoods are a really light caliper, I'd never checked.
Hey Chris, Yeah whatever works. Willoods are very light, but the other surprise to me was that people always say how heavy the brembos are, and yet.... the penalty is in the disc with the added inertia and the shift up to 16`s.
Yet the 305 discs are really not that much heavier than the 280's. As for wheels, 15" MO's if every gram counts.
MO's are heavy for an alloy wheel, lighter than G60 steel wheel, but Team Dynamics Pro Race (1.2?) and Rota slipstreams are much lighter. See the wheel weight thtead ftw. Good work from Bryn, I didnt know the Brembo were so light.
I get what you are saying, (now that I'm not viewing cgti on my phone lol) That as MO 15" are able to fit 305mm Brembo .. just, that they would be lighter than pretty much all 16" setups? (bigger wheel = extra metal etc.) It is only a certain ET of MO 15" that work though, something like ET20 I have 4 at ET35 and 2 in the garage at ET20 I think
Having looked at the wheel weight thread I'm now not convinced a 16" TD still wouldn't be lighter than 15" MO. Never knew they were quite that chunky (9kg!!!) But curiously the 16" 6-spoke MO is 200g lighter at 8.8; and I'm sure the extra bolt hole doesn't make that much difference (both 7J). Food for thought. Still, very pleased about the G60 vs Brembo caliper comparison. Thanks, Bryn. By the by, can we have the information from here and here copied over to this thread as well, for comprehensiveness? Best leave the originals in place out of respect for the owner but I don't know if you can copy individual posts.
