they also only specify one gasket for mkIII vr6.

EDIT: just phoned them and they say the only h/gasket they do for mkIII vr6 is the elring one. the bloke also didn't know there was a vr6 in a mkIV!!

according to vortex, the part number is 021 103 383 N

it's the very early mk4's, before they brought out the 24v.

    they don't last long.

I uess you can get an aftermarket one for the mk4, but pinning down the exact model is hard, you'd probably end up with a 24v one.

Personally i would buy all the bits from VW, even though its rather expensive, you know it will last.

a question to whoever knows !

trying to 'time' my engine before removing the head. so far i've got
the cam cover off and i've moved the cams into the correct position
by turning the road wheel (car jacked up) clockwise in 5th gear so
the end slots are horizontal and no. 1 cylinder valves are closed as
    per the bentley manual.

my problem is this. i don't see the same alignment mark thro the
gearbox casing as in the bentley manual (this is a tringular mark
right next to the casing mark - nice and clear) All i can see is a
different mark quite deep down (about 4 inches) which is sort of
aligned depending on what angle you look at it. Very ambiguous
that. So how do you know what is the correct alignment when it
changes as you move ? Is it not that critical. [:s]

There's a sticky up bit on the clutch plate that should line up with the point in the hole in the bellhousing IIRC.

Take the spark plug out of #1 (rear left) and see if you can see or feel that the piston is at TDC. if it's not, keep turning the engine over until it is, then go look in the bellhousing hole.

phatvr6. I was not looking for a sticking up bit before, just a gap in
the clutch plate with an arrow on it. Anyway I looked the sticking up
bit today and it was there but not aligned with the mark. I probably
need the vw camshaft gauge to get it lined up accurately. do others
    people use this ?

So I tried rotating the engine again and it seems to line up this time.
phew ! I took a pic of the bellhousing timing marks (sticky up bit
does in fact seem to have a small arrow on top). Theres a pic of the
camshafts taken at the same time to show correct position. May help
    other people with vr6's.

    thanks

Go off the crank, that flywheel mark needs to be bang on.

your cams may not align perfectly due to chain stretch.

The crank can't stretch, or twist, it's the master reference point for timing.

It can't be that far off, bothe #1 valves are closed, and the cam slot appears to be largely horizontal too.

I'd say that's safe to take the head off (once you get that clutch mark bang on the pointer.
