Nothing wrong with the drivers, just very few good examples round nowadays as most people haven't looked after them in their older ages! Plus 1.6 drivers are cheaper to insure! ;)

I would dispute the fact that drivers are slow. Yes, compared to the gits that most of you drive, they are not performance machines, but they are quite capable of breaking the ton (on the speedo anyway). And as for having no torque, they have more torque than power

Ok, so the 1.6 is a poor relation to the gti (I actually drive a CL, not a driver) but they are still dubs, and that is all that counts IMHO (I am biased though; went from a 1.4 16v metro to a 1l fiesta to a 1.6 Golf CL)

Oh, and I picked up my goof for 300 with 132000 on the clock. No body rust, and a solid engine.

You make some valid points VR666M. It is still a Dub and some of the nicest golfs i've seen have been small engine models. Look at many of the examples on the continent. They will break a ton but you'll be waiting 25 seconds for it to happen....

Does the fact the drivers (1.6) engines have a lower compression ratio means its more likely to last longer than a Gti? Like diesels are supposed to last longer due to their extremely low compression ratio?!?!

1.6 CL and 1.6 Drivers are the same car, apart from the Driver got a few GTI styling mods.

Say that it takes 12 seconds to get to 60 mph, then to wait a further 13 for a ton seems like quite a long time to me... no?

How long do you really sit a ton?

Aslong as it does 85 -90 i'm happy.

I have seen 120 on my clocks but that was pushing it,

    I've seen 110 and thats with that sh!tty 4 speed box, or is it a 3 + E box?

I find mine is fairly fun around town in 2nd and third, but above 60 mph the fun kind of stops.

my point (and not very well made at that) was that as it didnt have all the body kit etc on it, the CLs are lighter, and therefore more responsive. probably by about not alot

I just wish they had put anti roll bars on the bloody things

you can, but it's not as easy as fitting uprated arbs to a gti. Think the subframe needs drilling? Might be wrong never done it.

All depends if you have the brackets there or not.
