It’s a nightmare, a job I thought was going to be nice and straight forward! I think taking a few mm of the pads is what I’m going to do! Hopefully I don’t get the same issue with the rears lol

I had to take metal off the carriers both front and rear to clear the discs

Are you sure the piston doesn’t just need pushing back into the calliper a bit more?

100% sure, I have an old caliper without a piston in and still doesn’t fit

These jobs always seem to throw up something.i also am doing brakes on a mk5 gti currently.ive had issues with the massive m14 carrier bolts (overlkill)now removed.no backplates had to get new ones.and now and seized caliper.what was gonna be a few hours work is now into its second weekend lol.hope you get sorted I suppose easiest route is the pads.

What’s the measurement of the pads on the disc and what’s the measurement of the gap in the caliper? Your picture makes it look significantly too small?
I’ve seen the measurements in post 14 but that’s not very clear?

Im about to do this exact upgrade and looking at the parts I have the only thing that jumps out are the pads. Yours look thicker than mine, and mine definitely don’t have the steel plate on the back of them. Have yet to assemble mine as I need to swap the hubs on the front still, but will do a mock assembly this afternoon and see if I spot anything that might help you.

My pads did have metal plates and I’m sure they are the same.

Just dug out my calliper, disk and pads and they all fit inside each other with a few mm spare. Worth noting that my disk is stamped 18mm by Brembo but when I measure it it’s 20mm. Pads are EBC, and calliper is a Lucas 54.

The 18mm is the minimum thickness allowed, after it has worn.

Thanks all for the replies, very much appreciated! Just been and measured a few bits… The width of the pads and disc together is about 53mm

Doesn’t seem to be the calipers, pads or discs and these all fit together with no problems

The depth from the top of the carrier to the floor (through the caliper cooling slot) is about 97mm - from reading other threads this indicates the carrier is the one for 256mm brakes

With the slide pins compressed in the carrier, the top of the pin sits about 30mm from the carrier - I have no idea what this should be but just from looking it seems quite high?

These are the guide pins for my carriers. They can be pushed all the way into the carrier.

I think you’ve helped me solve it! Measured the ones I got with the caliper and they are 7cm total length. I managed to dig out one I got with the second hand calipers and is about 6cm. Going to go test fit and then order some new ones if it fits together! Appreciate the help mate!
