If you have the know how it will cost you the price of the clutch which will be around 70 ish but if you have to pay someone else to do it then your looking at probably a max of 3 hours labour on top so 250 is a bit steep!

Thanks for getting back to me Gringo, I do think it sounds a bit steep but i have no gear at all other than a leatherman so think I might have to pay for it. Mr Clutch are usually cheap and cheeful. Unless someone on the sight can recommend anyone.!

I wouldn't use Mr Clutch myself - the local one fitted the wrong clutch to my car three times in three weeks - had to keep going back, as they kept falling apart [:x] . I might just have been unlucky, but I don't ever plan to go back to try my luck again!

250 for a clutch fitted sounds alright to me.
Come on guys, mechanics have to make a living too, nobody works for charity.

sounds okay to me too....put it this way if you do it yourself it will take all day ,youl need a mate to help lift it ..and its a sod of a job to do in the driveway

just insist on a good brand clutch like sachs /luk ...you could supply your own

What is an OE Clutch. I called Mr Clutch and the standard one was 170 for all three parts (recon) so I asked for a new one and that was only 200.00 That sounds alright to me. I'll only get it if you guys say its alright.

    Thanks for all the advice.

    Go for a new one!

I'd get my own clutch from somewhere, then just get someone to fit it. Most garages would do it.

i was quoted 200 for mine

but then the mechanic basicly told me to do it myself

"you should be able to do it if you've had your engine in bits"

im just too scared, i only did my own gasket cos if it broke i hadnt lost anything, but it still goes with a broken clutch...

so i was going to get in touch mr mr clutch, but if they're crap then i might not bother...

250 for fitting a new clutch is about right as it is very labour intensive as you very nearly remove the engine to get the gear box out.

Mr Clutch is the biggest F*CKING con ever. They are a bunch of cowboys. Had them do my fiat (i know piece of sh*t) and they put a huge dent in the tail agte and then said it arrived with the dent in. Took 2 months to get them to pay.

Then when i was at the scrap yard getting a few small bit for the golf i saw a Mr Clutch guy taking apart somethjing in the engine bay of a van. No doubt they had f*cked something and where gtting the parts from the battered car in the scrappy.

They will take your money and only give the cheapest crap they can get away with.

Get a garage to do it and buy the clucth from VW as most places will buy the not so good LUC clutches

First make absolutely sure your clutch cable is not at fault (you don't want to pay Mr. Clutch 250 for simply changing your clutch cable ;) ) .

Second, find out the cause of the clutch failure i.e. is it just wear (clutch should have lasted about 80,000+ miles withy normal use) or have you got a gearbox/engine leak which has ruined the clutch or is it just the clutch release bearing.

I bought a Sachs clutch for 75 all-in, and paid the same to have it fitted (3 hours labour) to a Mk2 Gti 16V. That was the going rate 2 years ago from small local garages and there's no way I would spend 250 for a clutch change today (especially as Mr. Clutch will most likely fit a reconditioned or made-in-albania for 2.37 one). Best bet is to shop around and get recommendations of local garages from family on friends. You shoul easily get a better deal than Mr. Clutch.

I'd go to a VW approved garage and supply them with the clutch to fit. They'll know the car better and will do a better job with much less chance of breaking anything.

They also should be able to see any other problems while they're in there like duff oil seals etc.

    Cheers,
    Joe

Am I the only one who thinks that 250 to fit a clutch is fucking extortionate? Jesus christ, I'd do it for half that......

ok OE = Original Equipment, or what you'd buy from VW. Try somewhere like German Sweedish and French. I paid about 90 for an OE clutch from my local VW parts place, and about 80 to my local VW specialist guy to fit it. He did a good job, and it's still sweet as a nut nearly 2 years later.

Dont get ripped off, try your yellow pages for VW specialist repairers/mechanics in your area and call them up. you'll be surprised.

    where do you live mate?
