Thanks again everyone. I live in West London. It seems to be getting a bit worse, the gears are meshing when I try and change and I had to punch it into 3rd this morning on the M4.I have a garage I use in Hungerford but will ask them to check it out first. then I'll order the clutch from GSF or VW. If Mr Clutch are that bad I would rather pay a bit more and have some comeback. I use a ford Garage in Hungerford as they seem to be OK when you complain. I had the cambelt and water pump changed a few weeks ago and the plastic shield underneath one of the belts blew off on the motorway, I bought the part and they fitted and will give me the price of it off my next bill.

VWpolo2000, I know a guy local to me, who works alone, but he's a VW specialist and charges very good rates. He's an honest respectable mechanic, which if you can find one local to you, you should try and hold onto!

jc, 80 seems steep to fit a clutch? try calling your local places and ask how much they charge.

    Ok, nice one.
I have done a couple myself, and i must admit if i only had to pay someone 80 quid labour then i wouldn't bother again
As for prices, most garages will charge 300+ to supply and fit a clutch, its not cheap.

Paid 60 for my Sachs one. Piece of urine, literally, with the engine out.
An absolute fucker if you do the job with the engine in, as we found out the other week. [:^(]

Went to Mr Clutch, he told me it was fine and not to worry. he wouldnt change my gearbox oil though, he said it will cause more problems than not changing it! Anyway it actually seems OK so I was possibly overreacting a bit after my girlfriend had used it for a week. She was probably driving with the clutch half depressed.

Its an afternoon job with the engine in. Its not actually that hard once you've done it once or twice. The worst bit is getting the gearbox out of the bay when your holding it above your head, its pretty heavy (i did it on a 2 poster ramp). Its can be a right female doger getting it located into the splines when it goes back in as well.
