sorry mate cant help you on that one.but if you do find out i'd be interested to know.

i wonder if you'd have to replace the hood at the same or if its easy to swap over.

my hoods in pretty good condition but i fancy a mohair job.

    Is it a GTi...???
You may have to clean the tank out or the main filter will clog and you could damage the main pump.......and I don't know if the tanks are available....I was told I had one of the last ones from VAG.....

yep its a gti,and its got the old noisy pump. [xx(]
ill stick a magnet in the tank and drain it,while changing fuel filter etc.
may have to see how the pump holds out for now...

it is quite bad, hardly dare put petrol in it.

..well the pump can be noisy, mine is and it's a new one, but is ok, turned out there was nothing wrong with the old one, did not cure the problem I had, and the garage (NOT Volksline) had 'disposed' of the old pump. Have not used them since.....

best of luck cleaning the tank out, a good flush may do it, but mine was really rusty inside......

    bloody hell..

    i would be p1ssed off!

You should bl00dy take the car back to person you bought it from and demand an explanation for either them not telling you about the problem.

Things may be 'as sold as seen' but come on......a rotten hood frame! thats big bucks!

    Agreed....to a point.
The GTi was obviously rotten when I bought it (for nearly nothing),
    BUT:
... the Clipper looked ok, no evident rust under the inside of the rear window frame - UNTIL the old hood was taken off. But we were prepared for that.

Moral: even if the hood has been replaced DO NOT trust the rear window frame .... (check out the thickness (even) of the metal on a new frame) ......use plenty of hamerite on the frame too before fitting it.

The window frame goes just round the window (what the rear window seal sits in. Held in by 2 straps at the top and bolted to your 2 hinges either side of the parcel shelf.
If your whole frame was rusty you would definitely know about it. You can see most of it with the roof partly down.

That's the best way to learn.
If it's any help here is a cross section of the frame. Just get inside the car and look at the back window, should be self explanatory.
