Right, am going to do this.

Going to do the head gasket, no thermostat in her so Im near sure its the gasket. In any case, at 104k it'll not do any harm and I'll do the valve stem seals etc while im there.

Whether I can turn all of this to my advantage in the loving dept remains to be seen, though 2am texts bode well I think.

If you do manage to 'work one in there' we expect to hear about it, after all our helpful advice :p

EDIT: Consider doing the timing belt at the same time

EDIT 2: You could tie her up with the old one [}:)]

You might have a point here.

Here I am trying to do the old me-real-man-work-at-engines thing when theres no need.

As I say, the 1.4 engine - VAG or no VAG - isnt deserving of the effort. It should be allowed to scald itself gracefully and then be left to rust.

Yep. Plan B. Forget about fixing the heap of sh1t and try the old fashioned "wining and dining" approach.

Never thought Id be getting this high quality advice on here.

Daily Drive is a Mk2 Gti 8v... with a 2.0 fast road engine half built

Toy car is a 1977 911 Carrera 3.0. Locked up in dry storage for the winter, if I can resist the temptation.

Do you wear your boots to bed, often?;)

You have to be old to afford the insurance.... although I pay less on the 911 than the golf, cos the 911's on a classic policy. But you'll have to shop around for insurance if you're under 30.

I know a guy with a 1977 911 turbo 3.0. Black with chrome trim (they only made about 2 Black / chrome ones in RHD).

17k ish, but getting a wee bit crumbly round the edges.

Early 911's, and especially turbos are a real handful (are you ??)... are you sure you want to take that on?

I've had mine sideways a couple of times in the dry. It takes a bit of catching...wouldn't want to have to catch it from a slide in the wet. I've driven rear-drives before, but they were mostly Front-engine, rear-gearbox Alfas which are a lot more predictable.

cant wait till i find one, i dont mind a left hand drive coz im left handed newayz, yeah im a bit of a handfull too so will be well suited! i really want a black one, but theres a nice puple colour one that i wouldnt mind- im only 20 so my insurance will be sky high but never mind, wouldnt mind if it just sat on the drive just so i could look at it mmmmm..... ive already had 12 cars coz i get bored and i have had a few mk1 projects that ive sold on- i just have an urge for a nice big hunk of quality german metal with a grunty engine!!
