Oettinger used to offer in the early 80's Some engine capacity increase up to 2.0 liter out of the 1.6 H block The oettinger head gasket were 83 mm bore but cost an arm and a leg Close to 300€ for the head gasket alone I won't be able to tell you how thick it s but I could find out I am looking into were to source good head gasket at better price then the oettinger one I totally understand that you prefer to keep your engine; I am doing the same So no disrespect . However those engine being that old we got to have almost everything specially made Which ain' t cheap
The standard gasket for the 1.6 engines is Elring 820.385, which is 81mm and 1.75mm thick (1.6 to 1.7mm compressed). Once upon a time Schrick used thinner versions in their 130bhp 1.6 EG engines to raise compression without changing pistons. KWL motorsport can offer 81 or 83mm bore versions for the 1.6 block, thickness not yet confirmed, but costs 171 euros. Ouch. This is the Group A gasket for 1.8 blocks (16 or 8 valve) and if I had a later block i'd be using it: http://www.autotech.com/prod_engine_headgaskets.htm#groupa 83mm maximum bore. 1.4mm thickness uncompressed. Increases C/R by around 0.4:1. There was also a 'cut ring' type gasket available for the 1.6 but I believe this is only necessary on very high C/R engines (e.g. one stage down from Will's rings) If it comes to it, custom made gaskets are an option. Advice from Cometic is 0.5mm larger than the cylinder bore. My preference is for a MLS gasket, so I'm interested to hear more about these Oettinger ones you mention.
That's Dan s engine god his engine look gorgeous everything been clean treated Chris as soon as I get my ID back I will be able to bring the car over And give you the cast reference ( shouldn't be too long from now hopefully) Chopperoli I am sorry I am really busy this week but should be able to look into the infos But I might drop a mail to cometic to see how much some bespoke head gasket might be
dig back an old thread I had a dream to have an mls head gasket for the early 1.6 engine but well .... the dream threw me very quickly back to reality as the first gasket will be billed 3400$ then after 90$ a pieces even if group buying I really doubt we ll find the numbers ... shame so we ll have to stick to a fiber gasket or a copper one now it s all about finding the good one what I can say is that the oettinger was a goetze but I still dont know the thickness of it
I recently swapped a Mk1 Rocco front panel for an EG engine from a Mk1 Storm... I checked today and that's an H block too. I think they're more common than people think. I'm going to look at another EG type engine too - also an H block from the pics. I reckon you'd be fine on those pistons with a 285-ish cam - it should bleed off the extra compression.
that s for an MLS head gasket if your quote is for an MLS head gasket from ElringKlinger then we could start a group buy I know a couple of lads who would be after one of those let me know
Early 1600 head gaskets Try http://www.nzgaskets.co.nz/ they list gaskets for 1975 - 1981 and 1978 - 1980 engines of 1588cc
they do indeed but a composite one not MLS and the bore dimension is too small as I m increasing bore size
Romain, why does it have to be MLS? If it's for very high compression have you considered Wills rings (now sold by Simrit)
chopperoli beside the high compression the MLS tend to be longer lasting and tolerate a higher clamping force fiber gasket expend and disform on the water way when the gasket dont match exactly the water way which they never do and their should be less chances of thickness variation on an MLS gasket across the lenth of the gasket but I m with you it doesnt have to be an MLS certainly not at this price
Good one But the head gasket are different bubble block and early 1.6 block Extra oil drain holes .... That's why they need to create the first pattern which cost an arm and a leg Then only 95$ per gasket They have the pattern of the bubble block already but nothing for the early 1.6 Romain
