in the airbox there is a large spring loaded flap think it's to let the hot air in.
how and when does it open?
    is it just pressure?

they arnt that smart, i had mile drilled and then put the MFA outside temp sensor in there, which confirmed as soon as you were stationary in traffic, the temps rocketed and took forever to come back down.

the best setup i had was using the warm air intake on the airbox and routing that to cold air.

    barely ever went above ambient

i put the MFA outside air temp sensor in my drilled air box to see how hot it got.

turned out that it got very hot 40*+ in traffic.

so seal it back up and mod the warm air intake instead.

You can just partition the box away from the engine & run a cold air feed into the box & when your back on the open road it won't take long to cool down as it has a ram air effect.

My holes around mine on the mk1 are huge though none are facing directly towards the engine, infact i put the battery into the boot to free up more air as they are behind them in the mk1 & i then cut a huge hole at the front of it to get more cold air coming in through the front of the car & had a pipe coming from down low under the front valance that would enter into the bottom of my airbox.

so fabricate something up to block it off from the engine?is that what you mean by partition?
and drag some cold air from down low into the main intake thats behind the headlight?

yes you can do that, you have to increase the chance of cold air reaching it more than hot under bonnet air..
