Weight is the most important factor....a spaceframe Mk1 would be an excellent idea. The other results on Chris' link proves that out...a 160Hp Lotus Seven which is only @200kg lighter was just as quick. I would build an ultra lightweight 400Hp Turbo car.. VR6 gives rubbish weight distribution and an N/A car just wouldn't make the power for a given weight. The Westfield XTR is a Good example....just needs the power increasing from 200 to 400Hp.
But for me half the appeal is going fast in something thats unexpected. anybody can go fast in a radical and it's not surprising but going fast in an old rover 220 on the otherhand could be considered more fun, albeit slower overall. Hence for me the appeal of a tatty looking mk1 golf.
How many VW in the top 10? That what I like to see if I had to build something a VR would be the last on the list! I'd go with something like a light weigth mk 2 (cheaper on body parts) fitted with an engine giving loads of toqure like a 1.8 turbo'd valver(not 1.8T) or N/A 2 litre 16V
Good point ref fun factor, a mate has a 400 brake evo and a pooty xr2i, he used both on track and has more fun in teh xr2i as he doesn't care if he stacks the ford! lol But take Ian's advice, that man is a god!
I especially like the 180bhp the mk1 listed as having... LMAO... yea Right.. bet its a shopping car too. and the wife uses it..
I didnt think so, there is an event at Rockingham tho this year of a similar type of set up tho, ive got details somewhere, I'll search.
I think Howfast died the moment they realised their insurance was on the margins of being invalid... Gaaawd knows whether the MSA intervened... And yeah, one quick ~180 bhp motor (plus the 150 it started with)
Yeh i never really got how they could do the howfast at bedford, as i understood they only got planning permision on the understanding it couldnt be used to racing or competition, but just trackdays. Anyway back to theme, only VAG & for trackday, this must be right up many peoples street. zoooom
I've got a 195bhp Mk2 with a 9a on carbs weighing 840kg and a regular 2nd / 3rd place finish in the speed league.
on the build what you like scheme, i've always fancied putting an audi 5 pot inline in a mk1 with a 4" roof chop and running rear wheel drive. spose it would have to be a 20v turbo lump mid mounted. all VAG.
It all depends on what sort of track events you wish to do, Sprints or Trackdays, If its a trackday car go for as much usable power as you can get but if its a sprints car Turbo's are a no no unless you want to come last.
I think Caterham had one in a 7 as a test car, maybe they were looking to put them in the CSR, they went with the Cosworth Duratec thing in the end anyway
