    Hi Guys,

Next year I'm probably going to swap out the 1.1 from my early mk1 for something a bit more powerful.

I'm new to mk1 ownership so go easy on me. I'd be looking for something that would suit the period of the car. It's a 1979.

This is what's in it now :)

Any opinions on what would be a good upgrade?

    Thanks,
    Neil.

Early mk1 with the single clock dash and small rear lights, I thought they were known as a series 1?
What should I be calling it then

As it was originally a small block engined vehicle, an easy and effective upgrade could be to use the Polo GT engine (3F code). These were pretty nippy and it would still keep cheap tax.

If you start going all modern multivalver pish, you will have to upgrade brakes and a lot more bits and bobs to fit a larger engine in.
Early mk1s are getting rare and it may be best to keep it relatively original but with a modern and more efficient twist. With fuel getting so expensive it is something to consider.
Your sig suggests you have a faster car anyway.

    Thanks

Tax is not an issue, it's only about 40 to tax for the year regardless of what engine is in it.
So the polo engine would use the same mounts, I'd like a 5 speed box too.

I will be upgrading the brakes and suspension at some stage anyway.

    Mk1 Golfs

Series 1 & 2 was invented by the same folk that refer to early Mk2s as 'Typ19'.

We have people on standby to shoot such deluded folk!

There is no such cut off and when we dwelled on it, I had about 5 Mk1 versions and Rubjonny came up with 50-odd Mk2s!!

Me personally id keep it original. Either that or sell it and buy a gti with a 16v engine fitted! Come up cheap every now and then

I'd say looking on how tidy the bodywork in the engine bay, I'd say keep it from the typ17 era

throwing in a fuel injected engine too easy - I'd say keep the 1100 in the back of a shed for the future
fit a 1300 with a duel carb or even ITB, could be in the regine of 80-90 bhp

or done nice you could fit a 90'ish 1.3/1.4 polo fuel injection engine, and still look 80's oem ish

It's in good original condition alright, 41k miles on it. I love a nicely modified mk1 though  so a tough decision.

That is too good to modify to any great extent IMO.
Subtle reversible mods would be my choice.
You could always pic up another to convert to something special and leave that one original.

Woh. That is clean and original. Would be worthy keeping it like that I think and selling it to someone who dont like modding.

Looks very clean and tidy! I put a 16V in my 1.1 but mine was a shed! Hard to know what to do as its so clean and original, maybe only do mod that can be un-done ?

    I think a G40 engine would be good! [}:)]
