    Hi Peeps,

Mk3 16v 2.0 here and the car is making a weird noise from the engine bay on tick over...

On tick over its like a, well it's hard to describe, a wooo, woo, woooo as it ticks over.....almost like a rhymic whining.....short woo and the longer woooo then short........

Revving it makes it go faster i think but you then can't hear it, it's at it's loudest on tickover...

any ideas? Its had a cambelt and tensioner and fan belt and all appear to be tight in the last 12 months...

Could it be the water pump maybe?

ill have an outside bet on the cambelt tensioner

to start with, id unbolt the alternator and get the aux belt off all together and run the car for a few secords to see if that stops the noise. aux belt runs the water pump, do dont do it for too long

new parts can be bad too and that noise is typical of a tensioner.

    what brand etc?

Not sure on the brand...maybe continental? INA?

Mechanic has taken a look and not sure it could be the tensioner or bottom pulley maybe causing the issue!

    Any ideas?

Well going to strip it down and see if there is any play in the bottom pully first, then swap tensioner and cmabelt anyway on a warranty claim.

Forgot to say the belt is also shifting about 3mm off the pulley. Put a screw driver against the belt to move it in and the noise stops! Shift belt to normal position and start car and immediatly it moves over!

With the cover off, the belt has moved about 2-3mm off the pulley, tiny flecks of belt in the cover. Therefore mechanic thinks it could be the lower pulley bearings gone. So will strip back and see if any play in it. Anyone ever heard of that, did a search but only found someone with a similiar noise and turned out to be the water pump, but definetly don't think its that.

Believe so - its really long and goes straight in to the block, on the 8v it drives the dizzy i believe, but on the 16v theres a blanking plate. Going to be a bugger to get out as the chassis leg is in the way.

Hope it isn't that and we find no play. If thats the case will just replace the tensnioner and belt again.

MEchanic says even if it isn't the tensioner we might find it stops the movement for a little while and it comes back again!

It can't be movement on the upper pulley as otherwise that would be really obvious.

is that the intermediate shaft bearing shells your talking about? there is no actual load on them bearings as such as its just spinning within so would doubt that'll be making the noise. you could check the actual shaft retaining bolts in behind pulley to make sure its tight.

so the noise is the belt fouling against the timing belt covers due to belt movement?

bottom pulley needs to come off to get bottom timing belt cover off to get access to intermediate shaft

So today has been a strip down...and the following is found...

basically...the cambelt starts to come off the upper pulley from off the tensioner.....

Today the cambelt AND tensioner was changed and under manual cranking the same happened in very slow speed.......it starts to move the belt away from the upper pulley and that follows it round.

Mechanic again checked it wasn't the water pump and noise still remains with aux belts off.

The cam belt covers are starting to get a cut in them which ultimately causes the noise.

We took off the tensioner stud today and popped it in a drill, it appears it isn't quite straight. This could equate to the the problem, but mechanic can't understand this as sureley the tensioner is drawn tight to the surface of the head/block so it wouldn't make any difference.

Any how new bolt has been ordered, has anyone heard ANYTHING like this at all.

No play in the bottom or immediate pulley left to right, but there is the TINIEST amount of play going out to in on the bottom pulley.

HELP! If the stud on the tensioner isn't the fault we are a little stuck!
