    Hi All,

    I have a problem with the heaters on my valver. They are constantly cold unless I leave them on the cold setting for a while and change back to hot - then they will get warm for a few mins and slowly get cold again.

    So far I have;

    -Removed the bypass valves and replaced with copper tubing.
    -Blasted the whole cooling system out including the heater matrix with the garden hose (everything was clear)
    -Replaced the thermostat
    -Bled the system numerous times

    After doing this the problem is still present. It doesnt loose any water, and both hoses going into the bulkhead to the matrix appear to get hot as the cooling system warms up. Does anyone have any idea what else it could be? I think the only two possibilities now could be;

    -Poor Water pump
    -Dodgy aibox heater control flaps (anyone have any idea what could have gone wrong with them?)

    Any ideas?? Its really starting to annoy me now [:s]

    I'd say check your flaps, they have foam backing that can deteriorate and stop them getting a good seal. Also the cables might be out of alignment, or theres a little cog on the exchanger box which can fall off.

    Will do guys, any idea how to check them? they are definately working, I can hear a light "clonk" when I adjust the heater from one extreme to the other, but I havent checked the alignment.

    Does the heater box have to come out to check them? heard its a bit of a mission to remove...

    its a pain to get inside it but if your just checking for movement of stuff you can reach like funkyfin said. Will be easier if you remove centre console and any hanging bits of trim.

    Ok lads,

    I've taken the centre console off and the heater control is moving fine, its also aligned in the same position as my other mk2 and I can hear a "clunk" when moved from one extreme to another, so that looks ok?.

    I've also noticed that if im driving at a steady 60, the heaters harldy even get warm if I leave it on cold for a bit then switch to hot, whearas if its just round town they will be a hotter if I do the same [8(]

    Any other ideas?

    Well theres definitely summat up with your heater matrix, did you blast it through both ways?

    if after a 60mph run you grab the coolant hoses from the heater matrix, do they feel as hot? (should be boiling!)

    Could also be an airlock in the system, did you run it with the cap off untill the rad fan switched on? I also find that the matrix doesn't get as hot if the coolant isn't up the the max mark, but I think that might be due to my bypass valves...

    Alright guys. Its definately not the matrix, i've put the hose through every part of the system and everythings clear. There are also no air locks, i've bled the system numerous times, and the matrix is filling up with water.

    The pipes are getting warm but not as roasting as they do on my other car so it must be a flow issue. After speaking to Andy947 we have decided that it looks like the water pump is the problem, i've sent for a new one so will let you know what happens on the weekend.

    Arse.. mines just got the same problem [:^(]

    It started getting colder on the friday now its stone cold??

    Flushed the system, new pump, new radiator, checked my 'flaps'.. I
    reckon it's somehow linked to my engine fan running on after every
    journey, even in this colder weather.. yet the temp gauge and oil temp
    reads normal??

    Well im going to rip out the airbox this week and see whats going on in there. If its all ok, i'll just replace the matrix. I've got nothing else left to replace so might aswell rule it out!
