yeah.. wish it was as simple as loose heater cables.. seems allot worse
than that. Been reading a few posts on Vortex, they seem to have a
common problem with exploding heater matrix.. basically floods the
interior with hot water.. great! [:s]

    Cheers smithy.. good luck!

    At last! sorted the problem.

The matrix tubes were blocked, so water was only passing through the top half of the matrix. Put in the new one and the heaters are working fine and really hot now, bit of a mission changing it though!

Would it not be possible to stick a pressure washer in one end to blast all the crap out? New matrixes are expensive and I've just forked out nearly 700 sorting my engine after head gasket failure so I can't afford anything else for a good while [:^(]

I wouldn't use a pressure washer, I think it would be a bit too strong! Just use a hosepipe on full blast in both pipes, that should clear any blockages!

Blasting a hose through the matrix wont necessarily clear any blockages. On mine, the pipes in the matrix that the water runs through were blocked but the water was still flowing in and out through plastic unit at the top of the matrix, hence why it seemed clear and wasnt heating up properly.

A new matrix is 33+VAT for a valeco from GSF. It comes with all the gaskets and stuff as well.

Ahh yes, 33 doesn't sound too expensive. When I get some spare cash I may invest in a new one but till then I think I'll leave it and stick to putting me coat on

Easy for you to say! my cable has snapped! also my matrix is buggered!

i have never owned a car with a working heater... my polo used to blast me with hot air... my golf refuses to get hot... [8(]

    Hi Smithy

I've also same prob with my mk2. Still early stages of diagnosing and I'm hoping its no the matrix.
Can you remember what diameter copper pipe you used? I'm guessing its between 3/4" to 1".

Do you think its possible to drill out the valves and just strangle the by pass tube?

I'm hoping its the valves gone, I get some heat at high revs, but need to get it sorted before winter sets in fully!

Try and flush the matrix backwards.

Plus if you Headgasket when you may have some Mayo in the matrix.

It was 22mm I think the copper pipe. Any tubing will do really, as long as it fits the rubber tubing well. Copper is good though as it wont corrode as badly. Dont see any reason you cant drill through the bypass valves, the waterways arent very large in them though.

Why not buy mew rubber pipes, you have to cut them to fit the valves, just ditch the valves and fit the full length pipes, looks neater.
