I had a similar problem with my golf, it would just cut out randomly. All of a sudden the revs would go and the oil light would flash. I got fed up with it trying to kill me on the fast lane of the M1, so I took it to the local VW dealership. It turned out to be the engine speed sensor that was knackered. They fitted a new one at a cost of 250 i think and the car has been fine since.
To be honest I wish I had gone to them first as I probably spent the best part of 500 notes trying to figure out the problem myself.
Hope this is of some help.

    Just solved this problem today

After weeks of trial and error your first post was probably very near the mark. The breather pipes were the key to solving my problem. Replace the fexi pipe to the rockercover and the solid pipe down the front of the engine. Ha presto problem solved.;)

I had a cutting out problem for 18 months. Ever since I bought the car in Feb 2006. Did it once a month or so when i first bought it.

Replaced coil, leads, distributor cap, plugs, air mass flow meter, cleaned throttle body, replaced ECU and fuel relays and problem went away for about 6 months. Went up to the midlands a couple of weeks ago (live on south coast) and it cut out (once) on the A34 on the way back. Started OK and got back home safely. Was messing around fixing a stupid oil leak from the plastic breather hose at the front of the engine and noticed a very badly worn lead (about 6mm dia) touching one of the hot water hoses running to the oil cooler. When I looked it it closely wires were bare. Turned out to be the engine speed sensor/knock sensor lead. After removing loads of bits to access and replace the extremely expensive sensor, also noticed the lead insulation and 'potting joint' at the sensor end had disintegrated also leaving bare wires. Fixed now. Would definitely suspect engine speed sensor if anyone else is struggling with cut out problems.

long that wasn't it. Still might help someone out there.

    similar problem

1997 Mk3 8V GTI, cuts out occasionally, sometimes days apart, sometimes months, been happening for around 1-year. Your driving along and suddendly the rev needle dies, you have no engine power but you coast along and the speedo still shows your speed. Sometimes if I change gears, the revs come back and I can continue, but most of the time I have to pull in, turn off the engine and wait 5 minutes, then it restarts. I think no rev_neddle_movement=no_position_information from the engine (therefore can't spark, no power etc), but I doubt the crankshaft sensor will have a fail-mechanism of randomly giving up from time to time. I like the idea of a chaffed cable, since my fault seems temperature dependent, once it cools a little it works again. I'm thinking of buying a vag_com, but I'm concerned the ECU does not log dodgy_position_info_error. Maybe I should remove the crankshaft position sensor & cable and attempt to test as a system, and check for chaffing. Anyone got photos of the cable mentioned or sensor to help me locate them? & can anyone confirm what codes are logged by the ECU?

    Mk3 woes!

    Hi guys,
Just been reading your problem/s and I think I've got something for you!
I have a Mk2 GTi with an ADY 2.1 8v eng fitted. I had similar running problems including cutting out, sometimes not restarting, very poor acceleration, excessive fuel consumption, etc etc. After swapping a ton of parts, disconnecting my Toad alarm, (I even bought a complete Mk3 & swapped everything I could over!) I took it down to Vince at Stealth. After a bit of ar5ing about, we found a couple of things...
    1. My Mk3 ecu had, at sometime in the past, been treated to a re-chip. The new (Superchips) chip had been used to tune up the engine, but had also been programmed to ignore certain fault codes, (handy) to keep the car running at certain parameters I presume! It was ignoring a dizzy hall sender fault, but that wasn't the main problem!
    2. When re-fitting a standard chip, some of the ecu contactor pins which 'talk' to the chip were found to be bent back excessively, so giving poor contacts!
    3. There seems to be a wide variety of ecu's all with similar numbers, but only the correct one with EXACTLY the correct part number will work correctly! We had a guess at a later chip programme which luckily worked!
Vince simply chucked out my old chip, plugged in a standard one & sent me out for a drive. The difference was amazing!! I went back and he changed some chip settings, now it's even better!!
Get it down to Vince, I spent a fortune looking in the wrong direction!!
For around 300 it was a bargain!
Good luck everyone, hope this helps a bit!!

I bought an OBD2 reader from ebay 25. No engine codes logged. This ruled out intermittent crankshaft position signal to ecu. I then read in several different forums that the ecu relay has a manufacturing fault that causes it to open occasionally, this explains why there's no fault codes. I've fitted a new ecu relay 12, the cut-out problem has not reappeared. Will let you know if things stay fixed. :) go the internet, could have wasted a small fortune using garages.

I got told by an experienced VAG mechanic (advertising himself as a VW specialist) that ther was f*ck all wrong with mine.

One crank sensor replaced. Boing! No more problems.

Just goes to show what a nice blast on the VAG-Com can do for you. I'd trust what the car was telling me anyday over some "expert".
