    Hi,

This all started when I though about fitting an oil pressure gauge but I need a bit of help. I've got really confused trying to work out which sensors do what on a mk2 1990 1.8 16v.
The Haynes manual is crap and I can find a wiring diagram, (apart from that russian site), which didn't help.

As far as I can make out there are 6 sensors that I can see that may be oil and water related...I think.. [:s]

On filter housing there are two
one at the front with a single orange, (or maybe yellow), wire
another behind with a single green & black wire

On the left handside of the head looking at the engine from the passengers side there are four more.
top right, a single yellow & red wire
top left, a single blue & white wire
bottom right, two wires red & blue and a green& yellow
bottem left, a single green & red wire

can someone help me identify what all these sensors do? And if any one knows where I can get hold of the right UK spec wiring diagrams that woul be brill. :)

The two on the oil filter housing are oil pressure sensors, the rating in bar and part no is printed underneath them (need to unscrew them), one is for low pressure warning at idle, the other for low pressure warning at normal driving revs, sometimes referred to as high and low pressure switches (bit misleading) one is around 0.25 bar the other 1.4 (to 1.8) they vary on engine, year and some have superceeded parts of slightly different values.

One on the back of the head is the oil temp sender for the MFA ,small round sender that usually has a flat round top that a female spade connector slides onto sideways.

one the side of the head is the thermo-timeswitch (the big one with a proper sprung clip connector) 35deg C and two pin connectror

then 3 identical black topped water temperature senders (0-125 deg C), small and have a female spade connector push onto them vertically, they feed dash gauge, ECU and idle circuit IIRC

    filter housing:
white w/yellow wire - high pressure oil warning switch (1.8bar)
black/brown w/blue wire - low pressure oil warning switch (0.3bar)

    Head:
    2 pin w/red/blk & grn/wht - sensor for cold start valve (5th injector)
1pin, black colar w/ blu/wht - Ignition control unit (FEI)
    1pin, black colar w/ red/wht - coolant temp sensor
    1pin, black colar w/ grn/red - ISV control unit
These 3 are exactly the same, so you can swap wires over any way you choose

And another you missed round the back of the head:
1pin, white colar w/ grn/red - Oil temp sender for MFA

Sorry to slightly hijack this thread, my oil temp doesn't work on the mfa (two different sets of clocks) and i know where the sender is. The connector is on but it might be a bit grubby. Are these sensors known to be iffy, or is it more likely a wiring issue??
    Thanks

Been doing a search and found the earth the connector test, it goes up to 160 and stops which i believe proves the wiring. The spade connector and the pin don't look too bad actually, i would be suprised if it was that, worth a try first i suppose. I think i found the part number as 049 919 563A, can anyone confirm?
    Thanks :)

That part number might be for a VDO gauge its listed as 0-180, it could be 049 919 501 listed as 0-125. ETKA isnt too clear[:s]
Whats the part # on your old one?

Edit: looking again I think it is the part number you mention :)
    Edit2: For the MK3 I get 1H0 919 563 - 0-150

lots more trial & error, plus getting lots of random incorrect parts from the muppet on the parts counters probably
(I say that but my local VW parts dude is great, yes I mean you from whites in camberly  But I've heard some real horror stories )

davidwort and rubjonny thanks for the information, it's been invaluable. :)

I also had other good stuff from davidwort on my origonal oil pressure gauge query with a really neat solution on an electric gauge audi set up, and now I know what all the sensors do.

    So I've decided I'm going to go ahead with mechanical oil pressure and electric oil temp guages, for the following reasons;

    - I have the gauges already so there is no cost.
    - VDO two pole sensors seem expensive unless I can pick one up from the scrappy.
    - I can fit a t-piece to one of the outlets on the top of the filter housing for the capillary feed and retain the origonal electrical sensor
    - I can pick up the temperature with an appropriate 14mm sensor, for about 15 fitted as the sump plug.

Once again thanks for all the help. :)

    Brill thread.
Can some one please post a pick of the rear oil temp sender location?

It`s just behind the dizzy, below the rocker cover earth point ... cable is green with a black trace (my car is `90` spec). Connector is a female spade onto the sensor`s circular head.
