recon so, but given the extra horses, this isn't surprising i guess.

mk2 weighs approx 1000-1100kg, so only 120kg advantage, which is the weight of two blokes!
Pug prob got slight adv on top end, but not much.

Nah, a Mk2 is less than a ton

    I think it's 930kg for an 8v, and a few more for a 16v

The 205 runs a low comp ratio (it's a multi purpose engine also used in bigger cars, vans, etc) so there's plenty of scope to cam it, skim and port the head, etc.

The downside of a 205 is they're even more prone to boy racer itis (lots of golfs are 2nd family cars, but 205s are too small for most). Check an insurance quote on a 1.9 before you buy one! I don't know the group but bet there's a big theft premium.

They suffer a little bit from a lack of suspension travel too...fine for road use as long as you don't mind a bumpy ride.

that'd be the plan, a decent cam and manifold to start with. And its no problem to get insured.

Ive been offered a decent one and i know the history of the car since it was new and its two owners, just getting sick of the slow 8vgti as it keeps needing new stuff

    thanks tho mate

yeah, just checked car stats, 8v is about 925kgs, 0-60=8.6, top speed=114.

Don't buy a 205 with a cat it kills the performance.

I have a 16v Mk2 and both of the 1.9 205's (non cat versions)I have owned in the past would eat it and spit it out.

If I had to choose which car to blast across country roads it would be the 205 every time.

I have a Golf because bits don't fall off, it is much more easy to live with and just that little bit more grown up for an old git like me!

Friend of mine had a 205 1.6 gti, cracking fun on the back roads. Couple of nice ones here if you are thinking of getting one:

I had a few rides in this one (1.6 lowered a tad) and the ride was awful but it felt quick for a 1.6.
