Haven't had any time to get round the lock up yet !

But, I was told by someone that the problem could be the cam trigger wheel being different ?

Should I have used the AGU cam trigger wheel on the AUM head ? Or are they all the same ? [:[]......

    http://www.audi-sport.net/xf/threads/problems-with-putting-an-agu-1-8t-engine-in-an-aum-1-8t.161073/

Not a lot of information on the net regarding the camshaft trigger wheels being different, but in the post above taken from Audi-sport.net, it seems to confirm that I do need to swap this over.

I was always under the impression that 1.8T engines were all interchangeable, as long as you bolted the various sensors to fit your engine loom.

It's the first time I've heard about the trigger wheels being different, so I'm hoping this will stop the cam sensor error coming up again.

Hopefully I'll get the time soon to swap those over this week and scan it again. Luckily I still have the AGU cylinder head. Will also check the wiring just incase. :)

Not yet mate. Haven't had a chance to get round the lock up lately due to work and busy weekends.

Hoping to get round there on Monday.

Turns out I had a faulty boost control solenoid and dodgy maf, aswell as a faulty lambda sensor, all replaced. Had it remapped and its pushing just over 200 bhp now. Will collect graphs next week and post up in my mk4 thread.

Hope you get yours sorted mate.

    Thanks mate :)

I've already fitted a new N75 and ignition amp. At least now I know they are new and in working order.

I'm just off round to the lock up now. I've got a spare hour or so to have a look at the wiring and check it with my multimeter.

Fingers crossed I can find whats up with it ?

    ;)

Right then. I had the multimeter out earlier on.

Positive and Signal are showing that they have continuity from the plug to the pins going to the ECU.

    Plug pin 3 ( Earth ) isn't showing anything !

So it looks like i have a break in the earth wire somewhere ?

What's the best way for me to sort this ?

Is it on just one cylinder or is it bad earth on all 4?

check the earth on top of the rocker cover first. and then work back

but then wouldn't it run bad throughout the whole rev range (unless vibrations )

Apparently this sender earth to ECU is shared with the barometric altitude sensor, Coolant temp sensor, Intake air temp, throttle body, crank sensor, knock sensors ? This true ?

What's the best way to sort this guys ?

Put your multimeter between the earth pin to cam sensor and pin 67 of ecu connector>> take a reading. You should aim for as close to 0ohms as possible. 0.3ohm max.

If the above is ok, check you have a good earth going to the ecu. Check the earth on the cam cover, as already said, has a good clean/tight connection.

While the connector is off, have a good look at the pins on the ecu. I had lots of issues with fault codes, engine performance and after redoing the entire engine loom (twice (I'm particular of how it is wired/layed out) I traced it back to dirty ecu pins. Cleaned them up with some emery cloth and applied some corrosion protection grease (used on BMW MINI recalls). Reconnected and it ran mint.

A good insurance policy, some petrol and a match [:D] Which is what im doing today if mine isnt sorted! Mine is now losing pressure on boost and going into limp mode. Theres alot to be said about sticking with NA cars! lol

Hope you have some better luck with yours mate

Thanks for that mate  Will definitely give that a go.

Hopefully tomorrow as I'm in a bad way today.

Got smashed in the head at work by a metal pole which fell unexpectedly. Massive gash across head which needed gluing, 3 hours in hospital and finally home. Not good :(

Was looking forward to working on the mk2 this afternoon.

It's getting to that point mate lol

Been offered a VR6 setup, but I think ill stick with the 1.8T for now. I'm determined to get it running correctly and have it finally mapped. [:D]

    hope all is ok.

you know what they say. "when there's a blame there's a claim" then pay someone else to sort it.... electrics is pants

But on a serious note you say this loom linked to other sensors, maf etc... could you not work down the line ie. start from problem and work back to each sensor until one work on the continuity.. (im just thinking out aloud mate i hate electrics but trying to give my 2 pence worth)

Just done a few test as above -

    * Earth pin 3 to pin 67 - 0 ohms
    * Pin 1 G40 to pin 62 - 0 ohms
    * Pin 2 G40 to pin 76 - 0 ohms

Both earths going to the cam cover seem tight enough.

Will have a look at the pins on the ecu connectors next.

Anything else I should check ?

Right then, looking at the plug going to the ecu , I noticed that pin 76 was slightly damaged around the metal connector, as seen here -

I removed the broken / damaged bits of plastic, re-connected the ecu plugs, cleared all faults codes and done another scan, which seemed to throw up the 00515 error code again !

What else could I try guys ?

Right then, so now I know that -

    * All the wires (positive, signal, earth) don't have any breaks in them, and have continuity.

    * Pins on the ECU itself look to be in good condition.

    * All earths are ok going to the ECU.

    * The plug which clips onto the cam position sensor is ok and not damaged, and the connectors look good.

    * I also checked the timing today too, which is definitely spot on.

Running out of things to test now ?

Could this be the ECU itself ? Anything else worth having a look at ?

    Cheers.

Similar symptoms some years ago on my AGU 1.8T was due to the ignition amplifier, but it wasn't necessary to open it up, as it was the external connections to the plug that were the issue, just needed unplugging and the metal terminals scraping gently with a knife blade to effect a complete cure. Worth a try first, as a new ignition amp unit is very expensive..!

each time you run and reset. when you check again are you taking car out for a drive (and reving) or just starting again in garage and just having it tick over?
