Ive got a Mk2 16Vwhich I have sorted as trackday car, first outing bedford next month on the 19th.

DOnt know much about the cars history but assume engine is standard, although surprisingly nippy. So have to assume original 136K mile engine, I have set myelf a 6.5K rev limit, whats the general feeling of what these engines will rev to on a regular basis without going pop?

Ive seen people printouts with revs well over 7K

Ive been corrupted by modern cars and have recently returned to the MK2, but have become so reliant on electronic rev limiters kicking in to save my enginethat I will have to discipline myself with the golf.

Well lucky for you the 16v has fully electronic ignition & has an inbuilt limiter @ 7200 ;)

Should rev to the 7200 limiter nice & freely if set up properly! id only think twice about revving it hard if it uses lots of oil or makes any suspicious noises!

If not then give it Cainage to the Max!! ;)

Thats good to know, engine seems quite healthy, although leaks more oil than it burns!! and regular coolant top ups are required.

7200 is pretty high for a 15year old car, will try and keep itto around 6500, Iassume there isnt a huge amount of power to be had after that anyway.

    Cheers

    I read somewhere that....

"The 9a will rev higher 7200 redline and the ABA will redline around 6800 but make its max tq earlier"

Yeah, cain the f**ker they loves a bit of it, only thing to watch out for in IMHO is the limiter was quite harsh on mine and you'll make better progress changing up as close as you can to 7200 rather than just slaming into the limiter all the time. Sorry if that wasn't you intention but it's how I read your post.

If the engine is standard, it will probably make peak power around 6500rpm anyway but you ar safe to rev to the limiter if need be. I have never had a problem with it on high milage 16v's.

Give it full cainage. Valvers love the redline, My last one was perfectly at home 100rpm before the limiter, although as above I would avoid hitting the limiter obviously.

The limiter on a standard 16v is very harsh. i found out a few times, when i got to excited in 2nd gear. [:$] [:$]

My current limiter is set to just under 7K. and its smooth as you like. [:D]

But i would say your safe at the standard limiter, thats what VW made it to do. they engineer there stuff v well.

All my VW engines no matter the mileage have seen the redline at least once a day..... keeps 'em nice and free and clean inside.....

Stick to 6500 IMO, I have spun the rod bearings on two VW 16v motors now, one at 153k and the other at 119k.

No point revving them any higher anyway, they make peak power at 6500ish in standard form.

B6 loves 7600 revs...just needs to be made a wee bit safer now! [:$]

 Hehe, you know I'm only jesting!

To prove my point tho, we have power plots of my car with 2 litre bottom end , flowed head and twin exhaust cam set up and Deako's stock 1800 KR 16v

Vince ran mine to the limiter on that run.
