Good MK1's are hard to find whereas good MK2's are easier

Both good on track depends on if you are in competition or if it's just for fun

Ultimately there will always be someone quicker on track than you....depends on the budget and the driver !!!

Can't say enough for a good well sorted MK2 2 litre valver for bullet proof.....well mostly fun.

This is the other one, Ex 1.3 bought for 240 but now has corrado 16v with webbers, spax rsx, eibach arb's, polly bushes, It feels quicker than the 20v but its designed for handling rather than outright speed.

i have/have had both, currently runninng a heavily modded mk1 1.6 gti, (see pics on www.wussel.co.uk, olly elworthys car,,) personally from what ive seen i would go for a mk2 16v as they are cheap tu tune, i.e. seconfd hand 9a bottom end and handling is better on a mk2, + many more parts are available, and if you break something, which you will!! loadsa parts in scrapyards, mk1`s are getting more and more expensive now,,,
