Well it would be weight saved regardless, dependent.

I've not seen anyone making them though.

    cheers guys

ive seen one which was a custom made, its laquered on top and looks a real good finish.

maybe i can chop some of the structure away too,may become a bit more flimsy but ill have a look anyway.

Why not make the frame out of carbon as well, when i made mine (GRP) i made both parts and bonded them together.

Might be too late, but the All Smiles bonnet that I was shown for the MK2 Golf was made so that the bonnet catch and hinges could still be fitted to it.

are you wanting a carbon bonnet for the look or because of weight saving? carbon layered on a metal bonnet will do nothing but look nice. i think what you have is a metal bonnet that will have been covered in carbon. i.e. all original metal still underneath the carbon.
if it is a pure carbon skin with the metal frame bonded on then it seems a bit bonkers... [:s]

the bonnet i have to go on my mk1 is fibreglass outer with a 2ply carbon inner layer. it's dam light and extremely stiff unlike most other fibreglass bonnets with no inner structure. i think it's the best weight/looks comprimise as the bonnet will look nice whn painted and it won't sag or go out of shape at speed.

to get one purchase a normal firbreglass skin (smith and deakin, awtracksport etc) then get the inner lined with carbon. either go to all smiles or one of the countles other places that now do carbon parts or DIY for the carbon layers.

I've got a carbon skin being made for me. Will just be the outer, with no bracing, hinges or slam panel fixings.

4 bonnet pins (with 2 locking ones) will hold it in place.

Now that WILL be light. [:D]

pol8 - nice idea getting a fibreglass skin and putting a carbon structure underneath it. I presume you had to give someone a standard bonnet to mould the inner layer? Then bond it all on.

When you say countless other places doing carbon parts/work, do you have some names?
