    WAT?????????????? [:s] [:s] [:s] [:s] [:s] [:s]
a G40 engine may be 1.3 but it will beat a 1.8 g60 on the pull off, wat makes you think a 1.3 driver is just as quick, if so we would all be in drivers!!!!!!!!!!!!
its a good idea to put a G40 in a mk1 tho, u would definatley have 2 put upgraded brakes on the back and front tho, who's doin the engine conversion?

I reckon you should G40 the pick up. even better! [:D]
To be even more different, why not see if you could make it rear wheel drive?
    That'd kick ass imo!

and about the comment on "if you drive a G40 you'll want one" I agree. Never experienced torque steer as mad as that in any of my 3 mk2 8v Golfs or 1.6 mk1 GTi.
AS a result, Im now selling my Golf and hopefully (if someone buys mine soon!) I'll have the G40 by the weekend! [:D] (bloody doubt it though [xx(] )

i bin paying a lot of thought to this subject...

now im unsure as to wether im spending any money engine wise on the mk1..

im concentrating 100% on the caddy i think...

and im really really struggeling to find a g40 engine etc..

so im thinkin of a g60 in the caddy..

i was lookin at some mk2 rallye g60's.. do u think i wud be able to transplant the whole setup e.g the 4 wheeled drive, and the engine etc to the caddy? bearing in mind the rear suspension on the caddy isnt "normal" cos its a pickup... :)

    thanks peeps :)

you couldn't really use the chassis of a mk2 for the caddy as you say the suspension is all wrong, you could how over change it but that would be a f**k lot of work!

my idea would for it to be like a mk1 escort, that had a similar rear end.

Just to digress from the topic at hand at present.

The Driver (which looks remarkably like my old driver btw) has the same mounts as a GT engine (also from a polo) they may not be as powerful, though mine is close on 90bhp they are more abundant. I was looking into doing this very conversion last year into my driver though keeping the 4speed box.

Theres a blokey on pvw that did it, though on twin 40's and was putting out a 'claimed' 110bhp.

This is just another option to look at as it'd be more insurance friendly. And...

it so happens that i have a GT lump in my garage too..

Just my 2p anyway. Do what you will, it'll be a good outcome anyway.

(the driver looks tidy from the pic btw, where you from?)

    e z geeza! ;)

im from notts but i bought the driver from stoke.

its bin in some guys family for ages so i dont think its yours! am i right in sayin there isnt many in this colour?

and what condition is this engine of yours in and how much wud you want for it?

i wud still need to uprate my brakes wuddnt i?

would mk1 GTI disks and pads at the front be ok?

and would it be easy to fit? i.e. straight swap? or is it LOADS of messin about?

as i think the head has gone on the mk1 so its sat doin nothing!

    NEED ENGINE! [:s]

that car in your pic is nice!

    early mk1 isnt it?

    loverly! :)

I sold it to a guy from Stoke, wasn't called Dave was he?

Think i've only seen 4, mine, one in the golf mag, one at inters last year (same one i think) and yours.

engine is in good nick, may need a bit of a clean, though prior to removal from car it recently had a head gasket, as stated already it had no inlet manifold or throttle housing, some blokey wanted it for his G40. Don't want much for it, though it'll be round the 100 mark.

I should hope so, if they can stop a 1.8 with 100bhp+ then they should stop a 1.3with 75bhp ish

as regards to engine mounts it'll go straight in, though if you want the 5 spd box then you'll have to fabricate a new mount. though the driver 4spd will go onto the engine.

I asked a guy a while ago about the conversion so i should have past emails. can email them to you if you like.

Cheers mate, yeah that's my 1975 Golf LS Automatic, currently on jackstands waiting for big fat carbs ;) Shh, don't tell anyone though.
You going to inters? It'll be there. [crossing fingers]

errrrrrrrrrrr..... i cant remember the dudes name, but he seemed a bit retarded!

did you old one need a new passengers wing?

and was the parcel shelf broke?

engine sounds good mate, where are you located??

Also, yeah forward them emails to me dood.

    olstar@maxxd.com <- to there innit :)

this is my first year where i will be going to all the VW shows... so i need to get to no some ppl first!

how much will a inlet manifold cost me?

and how much will a throttel housing cost?

or will i be able to steal em off the mk1 1.3 engine?

I wanted to change the colour, but i decided that i wud keep it when i found out they was rare!

    :)

thanks geezar, u very helpful! [:D]

do it, you know you want to.

The guy i sold it to was called Dave

No on both counts, Reg was A807 RCA

    I'm in northwich, cheshire, you?

tbh i don't know how much they are. As the manifold is bigger on the gt the G40 boys buy them up. i should imagine a g40 would fit as they are the same as the CL manifold. don't quote me on that though. The mk1 golf one wouldn't fit.

i said that initially, though they are summat different. they're especially nice when all cleaned up and shiny. :)

No worries, thats what the forums here for.

depends on what you mean by easy to find. just like any car really, if it's been crashed, swapped etc, thats how these things come about.

i thought as much as mine didn't have 9 spokes on it. and the guy only wanted it as a run around.

if you decide to put in a g40 or just a GT engine, you are gonna have to get hold of a mk1 GTI fuel tank and swap it for yours due to the injection system, also you will have a little fun witht hte wiring loom, make sure you get the loom for what ever engine you end up using.

on the subject of brakes also worth noting that braided fuel lines will also help in that department a great deal.

i looked into doing a g40 engine swap on my old mk1 driver, but decided against it in the end and brought a mk1 gti, the engine, charger, box and loom was gonna cost well over a grand, and i was on a very tight budget, plus all the other work that would need to be done to accomadate the new power ect.

another option that might work, is i belive that the 1.6 vento sits the same way in the engine bay (tilts forwards) and should sit on the same driver mounts (correct me if im wrong) this would make it aot easier, as the engine would still be running on carbs so there would be no need to change fuel tanks ect, and the wiring should be alot easier as there is no injection system to worry about, also if you are feeling flush you could possibly fit twin carbs? more power and a lovely noise ;)

    just a thought anyway

    cheers
    john
