    Hi all,

    I have a 1990 16v Golf GTi that wont start! [:s]

Had a water leak the other day coming from a hose located just under the distributer area, fixed the leak and everything was fine. Drove the car for about 2 mins down the road and it just cut out as i accelerated away from the lights. At first I thought I may have disconnected / loosened a wire when fixing the leak but everything seems to be in place. I have changed the spark plugs and tried jump and bump starting it. All dash lights ect come on and the engine turns over but wont start.

I have searched other threads but no joy. Any help would be much appreciated.

    Thanks :)

    Thanks,

fuel pump buzz's and the three wire connector on the dist is in place (if a little wobbly) but it has always been like that.

so one end of the three wires goes to the dist and the other goes to 3 sensors? hmmm! Will have to get the light out and double check in a min or in the morn, but im pretty sure they are connected mate.

no [:$] 3 wires to dist and then 3 other wires to 3 seperate sensors, not sure any of them would prevent it starting but they will cause running probs

    hi m8,

remove a plug, stick the lead on it and sit the body of the plug on something metal.

have someone turn the car over and check for a spark.

    neil. :)

As above, you need to do the easy ones.

Plug at a time check for a spark. Whilst you have the plug out check for compression (hand over the plug hole will do).

THen check for fuel; yank injectors one at a time and check for a MIST, not a dribble into a jam jar or similar.

Get yourself some easy start and spray into inlet. If this helps you
probably have fueling problems, if it doesn't you probably have
    ignition problems.

Check the engine earth strap near the battery as mine corroded once and did that, took me fecking ages to find out what it was!

    Check spark first.

    STILL NOT WORKING!

above cheques carried out. Rotary arm replaced as broken. I was advised that the fuel wasn't being injected into the cylinders correctly and that i could have a faulty metering unit! [:s]

Does ths sound correct? Is this easy/inexpensive?im not an expert when the problem gets complex [:$]

Have you done what has been suggested above and see if you have a spark output?

Mark the position of the dizzy
    remove it
    and with the cap off
and ignition on pos2 turn the rotor
when you turn it you should hear the fuel pump buzz
that checks the dizzy, the tci unit and associated wiring
It should also produce a spark from the coil-dizzy lead
should this be disconnected and near enough a metal (earthed) point on the vehicle.

Ok, got the car started at last:). Jump leads from mates carand just turned the key for ages and it was spluttering and then just eventually started. Its had new plugs and new dist cover and rota arm, and it didnt start after they were fitted, it just randomly started today [:s]

Now the car hasno power at all and engine makes a "popping / knocking" noise when driven. [:s]

Anyone had this prob before? Would i be right in thinking i could have a faulty fuel pump? Not to sure why it cut out in the first place and why it hasent started for a week and a half to be honest, but at least it now starts.

Thanks for all the previous suggestions people ;)
