PM me or post up here. Intrigued too.

Check the VIN plate, engine number against the paper work and and date stamp on as much as you can. Back of the horn push is a good one. Seat belts, Ashtray, engine parts etc.

If its in good shape I'd buy it regardless, could it be a reshell of a crashed 90 spec motor?

    Right,

I have been to see the car this evening and i found the following results:

All seat belts were dated 24/06/91
the ashtray was date stamped 04/89
No signs of a re-spray although body coloured bit in bumper has been resprayed at some point.

Date on V5 was August 1988

    Bizarre!!!
    [:s]
    any ideas??

reshell I recon, especially if the big bumpers have been sprayed to match the car :)

Edit: Not a bad thing if all the VIN number match the documentation etc
Edit2: I'd buy it, looks mint! That interior is particularly hard to come by too.

Think I agree with Rubjonny as that seems the only explanation.

The colour might be Sigma blue or Passedena blue. Have seen one for sale that looked the same colour and was called the Sigma blue and have also seen a J reg driver in a similar colour which was meant to be a rare one called Passadena blue.

Edit: Apart from the GTI grill badge is on the wrong side

Could have written off the '88 car and just swapped the history to this one. Did you check the engine number?

    I think it's a swapped/purchased history.

Is it not possible a stolen '91 car has been given the identity of a written off '88 one??

That's what i just said. Why have the bumpers been sprayed though?

Was in one or both of the bumpers that had been re-sprayed? If one, then it's probably just something as simple as they got scraped or had a knock and a 2nd hand one was sourced and re-sprayed. If two, it could be the same reason as just mentioned if the owner was fussy about the condition of them, or for some other reason?!

That is Bright Blue Metallic and I think it was only availabe on the 90 spec cars. What does the log book say about the date of registration?

If you're seriously considering it, I think an HPI check would be a good idea. Also have you tried ringing a local main dealer as some have access to the other main delears and can tell what work was done on the car and when? I tried that with one I was thinking of buying and found out that the car had done 74,000 miles at 3 years old, and now 11 years later it was meant to have done 63,000 miles! I left that one!

I dont think this is true as I'm sure there's a bloke on this forum with a bright blue metalic GTI with the quaterlight doors. In fact I saw a bright blue metalic GTI in last year for sale with the quaterlight doors too :)

Didn't realise that there were so many blues! Do you happen to know the blues for the years after that until the mark 3 started?
