MK2 2.5" Exhaust systems. They're Here!

As the title says, we're wanting to know who would be interested in a performance exhaust system?
As usual we're going to make life harder for ourselves by asking you what you want, but this will hopefully lead to a better product.
We're aiming this at the Mk2/Mk3 initially.
The best place to start with this would be to ask you what kind of power you are running and what you'll be using the car for?

2.5" full system from a qpeng kO3s downpipe for an AUQ on mk2 golf (originally 8v gti) with stainless OEM looking twin tail pipe running around 220bhp

 

Quite possibly on a na set up, the 2.25" single box supersprint got me close to a fail at Bedford, but the new build has a turbo so I think I can get away with a single non resonated box and 2.5" pipe

2.5" is a versatile size and should suit most people. I think that you're right Ben, noise would be a problem if someone were to run with a single box (especially if you were nasp)
It would be nice to produce something that could pass the noise test for quiet days, such as Croft. It can nearly 100 cheaper than the noisy days!!
G2T, what does yours register on track days?
Ditchyboy, is yours a big or small bumper?

 

Just to check, noise and power always have to be traded off when it comes to exhausts right?

I sometimes find my 3-box Jetex still a little loud. But then, I wouldn't be a boy racer if it wasn't.

 

Jetex loud. You're joking right? Especially on a turbo.

 

Well I was mapping my idle on the street once and a guy living across the road came over and gave me a talking to for keeping his little girl up, or something.

It's pretty hard to have a conversation on the motorway though.

 

For info, I run a 3" system with a single back box, and I was not hassled when at Bedford. That's on a 16v turbo.

 

Ts, car is nasp abf on kjet, mk3 dp and supersprint 2,1/4" id single box mild system, static @4200 was 97.5db, after 5 laps as I started to wind it up I hit 86.5 @20m driveby which is 1db from getting thrown out. Spare exhaust time! I reckon just a turned down tailpipe would prob just bring it inside the limit.

Sparrow, the key word there is turbo, what does yours static @?

 

I know the turbo is an extra silencer, just adding info for reference.
Not sure on static. Passed at Curborough and Bedford, so reasonably quiet.

Exhaust noise can be tricky. To give this context, my car has read anywhere from 86db to 96db @ 1m static using the exact same components. This was probably due to how the engine was running at the time (rich running tends to be noisier).
Extra silencers can sap power but a quality exhaust with quality silencers, which flows well will keep any losses to a minimum but like I've said there is no fast set rule for this.
G2T, you are sailing close to the wind. It can be bit panicking when you've traveled hundreds of miles and paid hundreds of pounds to be there, waiting to be tested..

It would be great to have extensive choice but ultimately we've got to go with what works. What we've got in mind is a 2.5" system with two straight through silencers (middle and back). It would be full stainless construction (including the silencers) with TIG welds and mandrel bends, designed and built to a high standard.
It seems that we're mainly getting interest from the MK2 crowd so far so we would need to cater for big and small bumper fitment. We really want to give these an OEM feel so we're not wanting anything obnoxious.

 

I could be tempted to go for that, price dependent. This mild steel system won't last forever, especially out here in the wet.

 

perhaps you could get some design monkeys in on the venture to help develop something quiet for those who need but also open enough to flow for higher output applications?

I'm sure if you found some enthusiasts they might even do it for free.

Hi Jon, our pipework specialist (a.k.a "The TIG") has a real talent for this kind of thing. He's so good, I think that he may have actually been an exhaust in a past life.

I am hoping to call on the collective in future projects. We've got loads of ideas and I'm sure that you lot have too.

 

Time for a for a bit of action with this one! This has been bubbling away in the background for a while now but things are starting to happen.
This is where we are with this now. The system will be built entirely from stainless steel. We only use European steel and even go to the lengths of making the silencers in house. This ensures that all of the components are of the highest quality and made to measure.
It'll be a 2.5", two box system with twin round tailpipes, built for big bumper fitment initially. I think that the tailpipes should look clean cut rather than having rolled edges. What I'm struggling with is the orientation of them. There are so many angles and styles but an over all clean cut, German engineering look, is what we would be going for. Definitely no plans for a flamer kit..lol
2.5" pipework will see to most peoples power needs, there are some serious horsepower motors out there running 2.5" pipework, check out the Evo crowd.
Most importantly, this system will be built to flow. No awkward looking angles or crushed bends. All bends will be mandrel and made to measure in house if necessary. To sum this up you're getting a hand crafted system made in England with European materials that will look and fit great for years to come.
The price will be 395 plus delivery, however delivery will be free to you chaps for the near future.
We'll be rolling these out in December so please speak up now if you want to add your opinion on the tailpipes.
These will be a serious piece of kit so don't be fooled by the price tag
